The Luka Doncic/Kyrie Irving partnership got off to a rough start on Saturday after taking a loss to De’Aaron Fox and the Sacramento Kings. After Irving led the Mavs to a 3-0 record since his debut, fans were surprised to see them lose with both Doncic and Irving on the floor together.

But no matter how you feel about the duo or their fit together on the Mavericks, there is no denying that Irving has changed things for the franchise. Even in a loss, there are different vibes in the locker room and around the team.

As ESPN’s Tim MacMahon said on NBA Today this week, Doncic was all smiles in the arena after the loss as he explained the joy involved in sharing a court with Uncle Drew.

“It’s obviously in its early stages. But I’ve never seen Luka Doncic smile so much after a loss than he did Saturday night in Sacramento. All [Luka] could talk about is how fun it is to play with Kyrie Irving. He said ‘so fun’ three times and ‘really fun’ three times. Luke wanted this trade, he recognized he needed a co-superstar to have any real chance of competing for a championship. He is happy to have Kyrie Irving and they’ll figure out the dynamic as far as sharing the ball and those types of things. They both have a lot of respect for each other’s talents. “

Doncic and Irving combined for 55 points in the loss, but it should give a lot of Mavs fans hope about what’s tome come. If they look so good now, without any time or practice playing together, imagine how good they can be with months or even years of experience as co-stars

Kyrie’s Future Still Uncertain Amid Looming Free Agency Rumors

Of course, the Mavericks took a major risk by trading for Irving. With only a few months left on his deal, he will become an unrestricted free agent this summer and will have his choice of teams.

It will be up to the Mavs to make this experience memorable and convince him that they can be more than a one-stop shop for the star point guard. If not, Luka will be without a co-star once again, with only memories of what it’s like to play with one of the best in the world.

Needless to say, it’s boom or bust for the Dallas Mavericks this season.
