  • Magic Johnson has expressed interest in owning a part of the New York Knicks
  • Johnson already owns a part of the Washington Commanders in the NFL
  • Knicks owner James Dolan has shown no willingness to sell the franchise

In recent memory, we have seen an uptick in former and current NBA players having ownership of various sports teams in different leagues. Legendary point guard Magic Johnson is part of the Washington Commanders ownership group in the NFL, but it seems as though he has his sights set on the NBA as well.

Recently, we saw Magic Johnson state that he is interested in having an ownership stake in the New York Knicks. He noted that he appreciates the way Knicks fans “love basketball”, and added that he wouldn’t think about “being a part of another franchise”.

“I think it would be intriguing,” Johnson said per Brian Mahoney of The Associated Press. “The only team I would actually probably think about is the New York Knicks.”

“I think because of the way fans love basketball you might have to think about that one, because I love coming to New York and going to the Garden and watching the Knicks play. I love being with fans who are so passionate about their team and the Knick fans are, and they’re smart. They’re smart basketball fans and so that is one I would have to think about. I think that other than that, I would probably never think about ever being a part of another franchise.”

The New York Knicks are a big market franchise, and there is no doubt that they would be a dream franchise for any prospective NBA team owner. They are a storied team and are obviously located in a prime city. Of course, current governor James Dolan has shown no signs of being willing to sell the team. Still, things can change quickly in the league, even on the ownership end, and we’ll see what ends up happening in the future.

James Dolan Recently Admitted That He Doesn’t Like Owning Major League Sports Teams

Recently, we saw Knicks owner James Dolan admit that he doesn’t like owning major league sports franchises, noting that the economics of those leagues are “kind of sleepy”. Though this isn’t necessarily a sign that he will decide to sell the New York Knicks in the future, it is clear that there are some negatives for Dolan when it comes to owning sports teams.

It wouldn’t necessarily be a good move for James Dolan to sell the New York Knicks, as they are one of the most valuable franchises in the league. However, if there is ever a point in time where he decides he needs a lot of money immediately, that will be an option for him.

The New York Knicks Are Doing Well Right Now

Though for many years, the New York Knicks were considered to be a poor overall team, they have made a lot of progress in the last few years. They made the playoffs in 2021 and 2023, and are clearly a team that has been working on sustainable winning. They also have the assets to potentially land a star-level player via trade as of right now.

It will be interesting to see what sort of moves the New York Knicks front office and ownership will make going forward. What is clear is that they are in a good position right now, and with the right additions, the team could end up making a huge leap sooner rather than later. That could end up making the team more appealing to a prospective owner, and we’ll see what happens in the future.
