However, the tide took a sudden turn when star point guard Ja Morant was suspended for a total of 25 games due to a second firearm-related incident. The absence of their electrifying floor leader posed a considerable challenge and cast a shadow over their playoff ambitions. In the end, a first-round matchup against the Lakers saw the Grizzlies fall short in six hard-fought games.

To recalibrate for the new season, Memphis made significant changes. They parted ways with Dillon Brooks, a move that shook up the roster dynamics. In turn, they welcomed Marcus Smart and secured the services of Derrick Rose, two battle-hardened veterans renowned for their leadership and poise.

With Morant’s suspension and a reconfigured lineup, the Grizzlies face a season that is fraught with both challenges and potential. Let’s delve into their depth chart position by position to see how they aim to navigate this transitional phase.

Point Guards

Marcus Smart, Derrick Rose, Jacob Gilyard, Ja Morant

The Grizzlies have fortified their point guard position with the addition of Marcus Smart and Derrick Rose, two seasoned veterans known for their leadership and playoff experience. Smart’s tenacity on defense and Rose’s scoring ability make them crucial assets, especially with Ja Morant serving a 25-game suspension for a second firearm-related incident.

Jacob Gilyard, a younger prospect, offers depth with his quickness and defensive skills, while Morant remains the franchise’s explosive playmaker, eagerly awaiting his return. Ja, despite his off-court issues had another spectacular season with 26.2 points, 8.1 assists, and 5.9 rebounds per game.

Shooting Guards

Desmond Bane, Luke Kennard, Ziaire Williams, Josh Christopher, Shaquille Harrison

Desmond Bane emerges as a key two-way player, known for his shooting and defensive prowess. He will be the go-to scorer for the Grizzlies, especially with Morant’s absence at the start of the season. Bane had another impressive campaign last season, averaging 21.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game.

Luke Kennard provides floor spacing and scoring off the bench, and Ziaire Williams adds depth with his athleticism and versatility. Josh Christopher and Shaquille Harrison, both young prospects, bring energy and defensive potential to the position, offering a well-rounded rotation.

Small Forwards

John Konchar, David Roddy, Jake LaRavia, Vince Williams, GG Jackson

John Konchar embodies the essence of hustle and versatility, making him a linchpin in the small forward position. His relentless work ethic on both ends of the court provides the Grizzlies with a dependable option, contributing not only as a scorer but also as a tenacious defender and an adept playmaker. Meanwhile, David Roddy’s scoring prowess and physical presence add substantial depth to the wing.

Jake LaRavia’s athleticism and defensive skills amplify the Grizzlies’ defensive capabilities from the small forward position. Lastly, GG Jackson, a promising prospect, enters the fold with immense potential.

Power Forwards

Jaren Jackson Jr, Santi Aldama, Kenneth Lofton, Isaiah Todd

Jaren Jackson Jr., the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, stands as the cornerstone of the franchise. Known for his exceptional shot-blocking ability and three-point shooting, Jackson is a multifaceted force on both ends of the court. Last season, he demonstrated his prowess by averaging an impressive 18.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, and a remarkable 3.0 blocks per game. Alongside Jackson, Santi Aldama, a promising young prospect, adds significant size and rebounding to the power forward position.

Kenneth Lofton complements the roster with his physicality and interior presence. Lofton’s ability to battle in the paint and secure key rebounds strengthens the Grizzlies’ frontcourt. Additionally, Isaiah Todd contributes to the depth at power forward with his remarkable athleticism and untapped potential.

Centers

Steven Adams, Brandon Clarke, Xavier Tillman

Steven Adams, a seasoned center with a wealth of experience, makes a return to the Grizzlies, offering a robust presence in the paint. Known for his tenacious rebounding and physicality, Adams is a force to be reckoned with under the basket. Additionally, Brandon Clarke, whose versatility allows him to excel as a forward-center, bolsters the frontcourt rotation. However, it’s worth noting that Clarke is expected to miss the start of the season as he continues his recovery from an ACL injury.

Xavier Tillman, another valuable option in the center rotation, is celebrated for his defensive prowess and basketball IQ. His ability to read the game, make smart decisions, and contribute as a key defender enhances the Grizzlies’ defensive capabilities.

Grizzlies Need To Humble Themselves

In the NBA, hubris can often be an unwelcome companion. The Memphis Grizzlies, midway through the last season, found themselves soaring, their overconfidence resembling that of champions, despite the fact that they hadn’t yet achieved their ultimate goal. The playoffs served as a humbling lesson, swiftly crashing them out in the first round.

In response, the Grizzlies opted for Marcus Smart and Derrick Rose, two seasoned veterans with a wealth of experience in the league. Their primary task? To instill humility within the team, reminding them that the road to greatness is a long and challenging one. This message, especially for a rising star like Ja Morant, underscores the importance of focus and dedication to one’s craft while sidestepping distractions.

As they await Morant’s return from suspension, the Grizzlies have the potential to challenge any opponent. A puncher’s chance might be all they need in a highly competitive Western Conference. Ja Morant, on a redemption mission, promises to be a force to reckon with. Keep an eye on the Grizzlies, as they emerge as dark horses in the West, grounded in their quest for both humility and greatness.
