The Memphis Grizzlies have made a move to trade versatile forward/center Xavier Tillman to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Lamar Stevens and two second-round picks, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. The Celtics, currently boasting the best record in the NBA at 38-12, are gearing up for a championship run and see Tillman as a valuable addition to bolster their frontcourt depth.

In return for Tillman, the Grizzlies will receive Stevens, a 2027 second-round pick via Atlanta, and a 2030 second-round pick via Dallas, providing them with additional assets for the future as they undergo roster adjustments.

Tillman’s style of play may not fit the typical mold of a Celtics big man, but his physicality and versatility offer a unique dimension to their lineup. While he may not provide floor-spacing with his three-point shooting, his presence alongside players like Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis can create intriguing dual-big lineups that can pose challenges for opposing teams.

Despite currently dealing with a knee injury that has sidelined him for the past four games, Tillman is expected to return soon and could provide a significant boost to the Celtics’ championship aspirations. His ability to contribute across multiple facets of the game, averaging 6.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game while shooting 40.8% from the field, makes him a valuable asset for any contending team.

Additionally, Tillman’s contract situation adds further intrigue to the trade, as he is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer. This provides the Celtics with flexibility moving forward, allowing them to evaluate Tillman’s fit within their roster before making any long-term commitments.

For the Grizzlies, the decision to part ways with Tillman is part of a broader strategy to clear contracts and assets as they look to regroup following the season-ending injury to star point guard Ja Morant. While Tillman was valued by the Grizzlies, they recognize the need to pivot and focus on the future as they aim to rebuild and compete in the years to come.

Overall, the trade represents a calculated move by both teams to address their respective needs and goals in the short and long term, with the Celtics adding depth for their championship push and the Grizzlies acquiring assets to support their future endeavors.
