Michael Jordan was unstoppable on the court when he played basketball, but his competitive spirit didn’t go anywhere when he came off it. His desire to always win manifested in his interest in golf and gambling, both activities he famously enjoyed. And while, for the most part, Jordan was playing for incredible sums well over $10,000, there was an epic reason why he would still want to play $1 blackjack.

Bleacher Report told the story of how Michael Jordan wanted to play low-stakes card games with the Chicago Bulls‘ role players: “But the back of the plane was the fiercely competitive high rollers’ room. That’s where you’d most often find Jordan, of course—until he learned of the role players’ $1 blackjack games up front.

“Jordan wanted in. Will Perdue, the Bulls’ 1988 first-rounder, swears by his memory of the following exchange between the Hall of Famer and John Paxson. ‘Why are you even bothering to play with us,’ Paxson asked Michael. Jordan, in his typical competitive fashion, replied, ‘So I can say I have your money in my pocket.'”

This just goes to show that when Michael Jordan described his habit as a ‘competition problem’ and not a gambling problem, he was telling the truth. What MJ wanted, and probably still wants more than anything, is to know that he can win against whoever is in front of him. That thrill is something he chased his whole life. It’s what made him the greatest basketball player ever and what keeps these stories about him so evergreen.

Michael Jordan Has Numerous Stories Of Not Resting Till He Beat Someone

The desire to compete and win has led to some incredible stories of Michael Jordan off the court. There was the time Jordan lost $500,000 gambling, and so he stayed up the whole night winning it back and eventually walked away with $600,000 in winnings

It’s not just gambling that made Jordan like this, he was this way even when it came to golf. There is an epic story of him hounding Chuck Daly till he got a golf rematch after losing to the Head Coach initially. Perhaps nobody has wanted to win with every fiber of their being in everything they do, like Michael Jordan, and perhaps that’s why the NBA has never seen anyone like him again.
