Michael Jordan believes in Victor Wembanyama’s abilities, so much so that he reportedly waited to see if the Charlotte Hornets could have landed the No. 1 pick before deciding to sell the franchise.

Per ESPN’s Jonathan Givony: “Jordan was awaiting the possibility of landing the No. 1 pick before deciding whether to proceed with a sale, sources told ESPN. It remains to be seen whether moving up to No. 2 changes that plan and what the timetable might look like if a sale did occur, as well as how that might affect the front offices’ decision-making process in regard to who to draft.”

The Hornets ended up at No. 2 and chances are that they could draft Scoot Henderson as the No. 2 overall, or they could look at Brandon Miller to pair him alongside LaMelo Ball.

While both the young guns bring in different skill sets, Jordan may have perhaps felt landing Wembanyama was a better bet and one that could have drastically altered their fortunes in the upcoming season.

Earlier, it was reported that was in serious talks with Hornets minority owner Gabe Plotkin and Atlanta Hawks minority owner Rick Schnall to sell his stake in the team. And maybe, just maybe, landing the French big may have changed MJ’s mind.

Michael Jordan And The Hornets Could Potentially Miss Out On $500 Million After Failing To Land Victor Wembanyama

Much ahead of the Hornets learning that they missed out on the chance to draft Wembanyama, ESPN analyst and NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski noted that the prospect’s arrival was valued at $500 million.

β€œVictor Wembanyama is the singular, greatest prospect in NBA draft history,” Wojnarowski said. β€œHe is so advanced skill-wise that nobody has ever seen anyone like him.”

Safe to say, Charlotte was pretty close to landing Wembanyama, but in the end, it was the San Antonio Spurs who won that contest. While this can be a solid start to a new era for the Spurs, the Hornets could perhaps repose some faith in Henderson or Miller to see how they fare and if they can put the Hornets in contention.
