As one of the most famous athletes to ever walk the earth, Michael Jordan never goes out of style — and the price of one of his game-worn jerseys proves it.
According to CNN, the item could reach a price tag of up to $5 million at auction, which is currently the highest estimate ever for any piece of Jordan memorabilia.
(via CNN):
“The 1997-1998 season is perhaps one of the most popular among Jordan fans, as Michael was reaching the height of his abilities while simultaneously pursuing what he understood would be his last chance at an NBA Championship with the Chicago Bulls,” said Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s head of streetwear and modern collectables, in a press release Wednesday. “The season itself is his ‘magnum opus’ as an athlete, and a testament to him as a champion and competitor. Finals jerseys from Jordan are remarkably scant, and the 1997-1998 Finals are arguably the most coveted of them all,” he added.
An estimate of $3 million-$5 million is the highest ever for a Jordan jersey, or any piece of Jordan memorabilia, the auction house said.
Of course, the 1997-98 season is probably the most defining of Jordan’s career, and that Finals series against the Utah Jazz was legendary. As the scene of ‘The Last Dance’ documentary and the last stretch of his prime, it’s probably the most famous stretch of any NBA player ever.
That being said, $5 million for a game-worn jersey is still pretty wild. Considering it beats out many other relics (like sneakers, cards, and other items), it’s no wonder why the high price is making news today.
No doubt, there will be a few Jordan fans ready to make an offer — something like this doesn’t come around very often, after all.
