• Mike Breen has broken his silence on ESPN firing broadcast partners Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson
• He referred to them as his ‘dream partners’
• Breen is expected to be joined by two new ESPN commentators in the booth for 2023-24
ESPN has shaken up its news network during the offseason, letting go of many on-screen staples that fans have been relying on for news and analysis.
The bigger shock came with a ruthless shake-up of the commentary team, which saw Mike Breen left alone as Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy lost their jobs. Breen has addressed the departure of his long-time commentary partners.
“They were the dream partners. All the accomplishments were because of what we did together. I really do feel personally any success I had was because I had those two guys next to me. They just provided everything you would want in analysts. They’re smart. They’re funny. They’re knowledgeable about their sport. They’re opinionated. They love their sport but are not afraid to criticize. They just had a little bit of everything.”
Breen also reflected on the personal relationship he’s developed with both Van Gundy and Jackson, expressing shock over their sackings in his full statement.
Nonetheless, he is looking forward to getting new partners in the booth for ESPN’s featured games and the NBA Finals next season.
What’s Going On At ESPN?
Van Gundy and Jackson are on a list of many notable personalities that have exited the company. Jalen Rose, Max Kellerman, Keyshawn Johnson, among many others, have departed already. More cuts may still be taking place.
JJ Redick was one of the names in the running to be Van Gundy’s replacement, but two new commentators in Doris Burke and former 76ers’ head coach Doc Rivers are rumored to be taking the spots.
