The Phoenix Suns collapsed in the 2023 playoffs, being wholly uncompetitive against the Denver Nuggets are relying on Devin Booker and Kevin Durant to have historic games for wins. Monty Williams lost his job because of their second-round loss.

It was reported that Williams’ dealt with some incredible personal strife during the 2023 playoffs, as his wife was diagnosed with cancer. This held up his decision to join the Detroit Pistons, as he waited for good news about her diagnosis prior to committing to Detroit.

Williams prioritized having contract provisions with additional health care benefits for his wife’s treatment and even access to a private jet, according to noted Pistons’ writer Omari Sankofa II.

Per a source, Monty Williams' record contract with the Pistons includes private jet access and additional health care benefits for his wife Lisa, who is battling breast cancer.

We are all praying for Monty and hoping for a speedy recovery for his wife, Ingrid. Former Bucks’ head coach Mike Budenholzer also dealt with personal tragedy in the playoffs and lost his job after a shock first-round exit at the hands of the Miami Heat.

Are The Pistons Equipped To Compete?

Monty has a tough season coming up as the highest-paid coach in the league and will look to hit the ground running with his young Pistons’ squad and bring them back to the playoffs.

The roster is solid and can be built into a contender within a year or two. Cade Cunningham missed most of last season due to injury but is still regarded as one of the best young guards in the NBA. Jaden Ivey was a terrific draft pick last year, and they have the No. 5 pick this year as well.

Bojan Bogdanovic is a terrific veteran to have, and the team has multiple options in the frontcourt with players like Jalen Duren, James Wiseman, Marvin Bagley III, and Isaiah Stewart. The team ended with a league-worst record of 17-65 last season, so improving upon that shouldn’t be a challenge.

Coach Williams will be looking to whip this group into shape and possibly make moves to further improve the roster.
