  • League could veto Heat deal if nothing changes

Trade requests happen all the time in the NBA, especially by the league’s big-name stars. Whether it’s one year left or four, contract length barely matters when it comes to trade requests and there’s usually nothing stopping a player from getting what they want in the end.

But in the case of Damian Lillard, his quest to wear a Heat jersey has crossed the line in the eyes of the NBA, and it could cause some serious blowback. A few weeks ago, Damian Lillard’s agent, Aaron Goodwin, basically condemned any other team from attempting a trade for his client, and the league was reportedly fuming as a result. According to Sam Amico, there’s even a chance the NBA could veto a Lillard trade in an attempt to send a message to the players.

“I keep hearing NBA would veto any Lillard trade to Heat. Don’t think that’s entirely true… but it’s what people around league are telling me they foresee. One source said league was ‘wildly upset’ about comments made by Lillard’s agent to media about it being ‘futile’ for teams other than Heat to try to make a trade with Blazers.”

The Heat have been counting on a Dame trade to save their offseason, so not being able to trade for him at all would be the ultimate blow to their future. Jimmy Butler, who turns 34 in September, is running out of time, and the Heat have already lost several pieces that helped them make the Finals this summer.

As for Dame, it’s unlikely that he moves off his ‘Miami or bust’ stance, but he may not have a choice if the NBA vetoes a potential trade there.

Why Is The NBA Angry At Lillard?

Unlike Harden, Durant, and other stars, Lillard’s camp has been extraordinarily aggressive in their trade demands. At one point, Lillard’s agent even came out publicly to demonize any team not named the Heat who dares to make an offer.

“I don’t think another team would do a deal like that knowing everything that’s going on,” Goodwin told Aaron Fentress. “But if they do, then they don’t know Dame.”

Needless to say, these next few weeks will probably be met with silence from Lillard and his guys, but things could get really interesting here if some other team decides to enter the fold. Either way, Lillard going to Miami is anything but a certainty at this point, and the best strategy may be for them to just sit back and wait for it all to play out.
