NBA Insider On Dennis Schroder: “I Don’t Know Where He Got The Idea He Was Going To Get $100M.”

Dennis Schroder was the starting point guard for the Los Angeles Lakers this season, averaging 15.4 PPG, 3.5 RPG, and 5.8 APG over the course of the season. While those are solid enough statistics for a starter, Dennis Schroder struggled mightily during the playoffs.

Free agency has come around, and Dennis Schroder has not yet been signed. There is no doubt that he is a capable player, but it seems as though the issue is the value of his new contract. Dennis Schroder notably rejected a 4-year $84M extension with the Los Angeles Lakers. Cap space across the league is dwindling, and it looks as though Dennis Schroder’s value isn’t as high as previously thought.

NBA Insider Marc Stein has recently expressed his surprise at Dennis Schroder’s belief that he was getting a $100M contract. Stein pointed out that usually, players have a franchise in mind that would be willing to offer such an amount. Thus far, however, Dennis Schroder is still a free agent.

While Dennis Schroder may not have the market that he thought he did, he can still be a capable 6th man or even a starter on another team. There is no question that he has some two-way ability, defending other guards well while also getting to the basket. There is no doubt that he can still be a contributor to a competing team, and perhaps he will get signed soon.

It is easy to bash Dennis Schroder’s decision to reject the money, but he was confident and bet on himself. Sometimes that doesn’t pay off. However, there is a possibility that he can rebuild his value somewhere on a one-year deal, and potentially get paid next offseason. Regardless of what happens, Dennis Schroder is definitely a solid point guard, and we’ll see what sort of contract he commands soon enough.
