The NBA’s expansion has been a talking point for a while now. We have had rumors floating around about an announcement even this year for teams in Seattle and Las Vegas, but nothing has come out yet. Instead, a new contender has emerged for a potential expansion team, Mexico City.
Mexico certainly has a large NBA fanbase and deputy commissioner Mark Tatum recently came out and said that Mexico City would have to be one of the cities in consideration if they turn to expansion. They hosted the latest edition of the NBA Global Games as well, with the Miami Heat taking on the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday and commissioner Adam Silver was in attendance. Silver stated that Mexico City has done everything necessary to be considered as the location for the next expansion team.
Silver says its "certainly possible" when asked about having an NBA All-Star Game in Mexico City possibly "over time" but not in the near future. Silver adds that Mexico City is capable of hosting on NBA All-Star Game weekend.

“NBA commissioner Adam Silver says Mexico City is “doing everything necessary” to be considered for an NBA expansion team. Silver added that after the next CBA the NBA could grow and there is “no doubt” expansion in Mexico is considered. More in @andscape”

Mexico already has a G League team that has started playing home games at the Mexico City Arena, so logistics shouldn’t really be a problem. It would be great if they could get an NBA team but it looks like any announcement on expansion is still some time away. Some Global Games will have to make do for now, and they got to see Jimmy Butler lead the Heat to a 111-101 win over the Spurs.
LeBron James Wants To Own An NBA Team In Las Vegas
If and when the announcement does come regarding expansion, LeBron James would probably be at the front of the line for ownership, especially if the location is Las Vegas. He sent a clear message regarding it to Silver earlier this year, and the billionaire certainly has some deep pockets to where he can buy a significant stake in a team.
Michael Jordan is the only ex-player who is the principal owner of an NBA team right now, and it would be amazing to have James become the second one. For now, though, LeBron’s focus would be on trying to get the Los Angeles Lakers on the right path and win some more games.
