On a recent episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, sports media personality Bill Simmons made a bold claim that Caitlin Clark, the rising WNBA star, has surpassed all NBA players under the age of 30 in terms of cultural and basketball impact. Simmons pointed to Clark’s transformative influence on the WNBA, her record-setting rookie season, and the unprecedented level of viewership and fan engagement she has generated.

“I think she is. I don’t even think that’s a debate.”

“I literally did not care about women’s college basketball 10 years ago in any way, shape, or form. So I think some things have moved toward just the quality of play is more fun to watch, but she seems to be some sort of catalyst that is just, it’s like before and after, and now we’re in the after.”

Clark’s debut season with the Indiana Fever was nothing short of historic. She averaged 19.2 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game while shooting 41.7% from the field and 34.4% from three-point range. She was named WNBA Rookie of the Year, earned a spot on the All-WNBA First Team, and led the league in assists. Beyond her statistical achievements, her electrifying playing style and ability to connect with fans made her a must-watch athlete.

The 2024 WNBA season, fueled by Clark’s presence, shattered viewership records. Her games attracted over one million viewers 19 times, a feat unmatched in WNBA history. The Indiana Fever became the league’s most-watched team, averaging 1.19 million viewers per game—a stark contrast to the league-wide average of 394,000.

The Fever also led the league in attendance, drawing over 17,000 fans per game. Their road games, often featuring sold-out arenas, further underscored Clark’s unparalleled star power. Notably, the Fever’s game against the Washington Mystics set a regular-season attendance record with over 20,700 fans.

While the NBA boasts exceptional talent under 30—players like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic, Jayson Tatum, Zion Williamson, and Anthony Edwards—Simmons argued that none of them have reached Clark’s level of cultural resonance. He likened Clark’s influence to that of NBA legends LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant, suggesting that only these three have surpassed her in cultural impact.

Clark’s impact extends beyond her on-court performances. She has been credited with revitalizing the WNBA’s popularity and driving unprecedented growth in viewership, ticket sales, and merchandise. Her influence has also been compared to transformative sports figures like Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan, whose individual star power elevated their respective sports to new heights.

Simmons’ praise highlights how Caitlin Clark’s rise has redefined what is possible for women’s basketball. Her ability to attract fans, break records, and dominate on the court has sparked conversations that transcend traditional sports boundaries. As the WNBA continues to benefit from the “Caitlin Clark Effect,” her influence is set to grow even further, proving that she truly stands out as one of the most impactful athletes of her generation.
