Draymond Green has been subjected to much ridicule over the years for his triple-singles but there’s no denying that he has been one of the best defenders in the NBA for the better part of a decade. He has made a total of 7 NBA All-Defensive teams and won Defensive Player of the Year in 2017.

Draymond won that award in 2017 after finishing runner-up to Kawhi Leonard in both 2015 and 2016, something he still seems to be pretty upset about. During his recent interview with Taylor Rooks, Draymond stated that he thinks he should have won more DPOY awards, adding that he should have won it in one of the years when Kawhi did.

(starts at 1:19:00 mark):

“I’m probably short two or three of them. Kawhi beat me, there’s no chance Kawhi should’ve beat me one of the times that he won. Now in saying that, Kawhi is an absolutely incredible defender, great, taking nothing away from him. Put him on somebody, he’s gonna lock him down.”

“But, I got Al Gore’d. When that happened, I had no idea you could win more first-place votes and still lose. How did I have all of those first-place votes and then some ballots I didn’t even make the ballot? Like that don’t even make sense to me.”

Draymond is referring to 2015 there, when he had 45 first-place votes for DPOY while Kawhi had 37 but he won because he had a lot more second and third-place votes. It does seem weird that some voters didn’t have Draymond in their top 3 and he is right to not be too happy about that.

Draymond Green Revealed What Caused His Fight With Jordan Poole

The stories around Draymond this season invariably in some way or the other get back to him punching Jordan Poole in practice. We still don’t know what was said between them right before the incident but Draymond recently revealed what caused him to punch his teammate.

Green revealed that he was dealing with some personal issues that day and that his emotions were running out of control. He was already riled up and just snapped at the moment. Many felt that the incident would mean that Green’s days with the franchise were numbered and he gave a concerning update on his future to Rooks as well. This might well be his final season with the Golden State Warriors and he’d be keen to cap off his time there with another championship.
