We live in a society these days that is a lot more welcoming of the LGBTQ community than in the past. It has enabled more of these people to be themselves out in public and not be afraid that society might shun them entirely.

One of Dwyane Wade’s children, now named Zaya Wade, came out as transgender back in 2020, and both Wade and his wife, Gabrielle Union have shown a lot of support to her publically since then. It is great that the parents are so supportive, but comedian TK Kirkland caused a stir by stating that they should have kept it private.

(starts at 1:16 mark):

“I never talk about anybody what they do in their privacy at home as far as their sexual preference or how they raise their kid. The only problem that I had with Gabrielle Union and her husband is that they put their business on the street and I think that when you’re an influencer, there’s some things that should be done quietly. That’s your child, do whatever the f*** you want to do with your kid but when you start seeing how you can influence the rest of the world, because believe me, somebody made a decision based on what they did, absolutely.”

Sure, as an influencer, you should be careful with what you put out there, but you can’t really criticize someone for supporting their child. While you can say somebody made a decision based on what they did, their actions would have also given those who had reservations about coming out the courage to do it.

Magic Johnson Spoke On His Son Coming Out As Gay

Wade isn’t the only NBA superstar to have a child be a part of the LGBTQ community. Magic Johnson had his son come out as gay, and Johnson, just like Wade, gave him his full support.

Magic also spoke about how they received letters from around the world of people stating that his son’s actions gave them the strength to come out and be open with regard to their sexuality. An action like this can really have such a positive impact on the lives of so many people. Charles Barkley also expressed his support for gay and transgender people last year, and it is great to see more and more famous personalities showing their support for these groups.

We are also seeing more male professional athletes open up on this subject, as former Atlanta Hawks player Isaac Humphries became the first individual in Australia’s National Basketball League to come out as gay last year.
