The decisions the Dallas Mavericks made in the 2020 Draft have caused them more long-term pain than they realized. They missed on their picks and didn’t draft players that became a part of the rotation, despite the hype that they might have had.

The Mavs were looking to draft Desmond Bane with the 31st pick but the Memphis Grizzlies picked him with the final pick in the first round, leading the Mavs to select high-potential youngster Tyrell Terry to be a piece on the roster alongside Luka Doncic and before the emergence of Jalen Brunson.

Terry’s Mavericks career didn’t end up being a success, with the guard then joining the development machine of the Memphis Grizzlies. With that also failing, Terry has made an emotional post on Instagram, announcing his shocking retirement at age 22.

This is heartbreaking to see, as Terry was once considered to be a relatively high-potential pick before flaming out. He played 13 total games in the NBA, 11 with the Mavericks and 2 with the Grizzlies.

Was Tyrell Terry Treated Too Harshly?

In the endless quest of the Mavericks to get Luka Doncic legitimate help, the Terry draft pick has burned them quite a bit. As a result, many fans often pointed their frustrations at Terry, who was disappointing on the court in his limited appearances. Even though the Mavericks’ first-round pick from that year, Tyler Bey, was underwhelming, Terry got a lot more of the criticism despite being the 31st pick.

In a sport that feels increasingly cruel, it seems like Terry just hit his limit on how much he could persevere through these challenges. Basketball is not the be-all, end-all. We hope Tyrell finds success in whatever the next chapter of his life is.
