Giannis Antetokounmpo, despite being in the NBA for less than 10 years, has already established himself as one of the greatest players in the history of the NBA. Giannis is a legend of the game and is still not in the prime years of his career. And last night, after the Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Sacramento Kings, Giannis paid tribute to yet another legend, from a different walk of life.
Giannis Antetokounmpo arrived at the post-game press conference wearing a 'Giannis 3:16' T-Shirt. Yesterday was March 16th, also known as 3:16 day, a reference to WWE legend Stone Cold Steve Austin, one of the most iconic figures in pop culture. In honor of 3:16 day, Giannis also drank some beer, something Stone Cold was known for during his WWE career.
Last year, LeBron James commemorated 3:16 day with a similar shirt to Giannis, which read 'LeBron 3:16'. LeBron James was a big WWE fan, and even once visited Monday Night Raw during his rookie year in the NBA, taking pictures with his flip phone.
On the court, Giannis has been as dominant as Stone Cold was during his career. Antetokounmpo is one of the leading contenders to win the Defensive Player Of The Year award. The injury to Draymond Green allowed Giannis to surpass him in the rankings. If he were to win, Giannis would be named DPOY for the second time in his career.
Giannis becoming DPOY would also make him the only player in NBA history to win the MVP trophy and the DPOY trophy multiple times in his career. The only other players who have won MVP and DPOY have been Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon, who only won one of the trophies multiple times, rather than both. Giannis could further cement his legacy as one of the most successful players in NBA history.
