After leading the Golden State Warriors to the fourth title in seven years, Stephen Curry proved to the world why he is one of the best players in NBA history. Despite winning three championships and two MVP trophies before, Curry wasn’t seen as a great playoff performer.
But he proved all the doubters wrong last season. Leading the Warriors all the way to the title, Curry deservedly won the Finals MVP title as well. Because of his performance in the playoffs, Steph has established his name among the all-time greats and, for some, has become a contender for the GOAT title.
Gilbert Arenas Claims Stephen Curry Will Never Be Considered As The GOAT
While Curry’s latest title and achievements have swayed away many fans, former Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas isn’t sold on the idea that the 2-time MVP will ever be considered the GOAT.
In a recent interview, Arenas explained why he thinks Curry will never be considered the Greatest of All Time. (0:18 onwards):
“He’s gonna always be slighted because he’s little… We have this idea of what a GOAT is supposed to be, 6-6 and above. And when it comes to smaller guys, you have to do so much more to get the same credit.”
“He’s not a highlight reel when it comes to jumping and dunking and all this aerial stuff. He’s a floor general. When you do a highlight reel and you have all the GOATs, you got one that’s just purely mesmerizing on shots.”
Arenas’ claims are certainly bold. While dominating the league despite being a 6’3″ guard is commendable, in comparison to the likes of Michael Jordan and LeBron James, who are constants in the GOAT debate, Curry’s resume looks a bit pale.
While many players resort to a role-player status by the age of 34, Steph is at the top of his game and is very much capable of winning the MVP title next season. If the 4-time champion can win a couple of championships and win another MVP title, he might sway some critics in his favor but surpassing the likes of Bron and MJ might be a bit farfetched. Where do you rank Steph in your All-Time rankings?
