Isiah Thomas is seeking to reclaim his narrative and set the record straight through his own documentary, following the portrayal of him in “The Last Dance,” the documentary on Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. The 10-part series, which aired in 2020, rekindled old rivalries and cast Thomas in a less-than-flattering light, particularly in regard to his relationship with Jordan.

“I will address this in my Documentary; the timing is fascinating indeed.”

Thomas has since expressed his displeasure with how he was depicted in “The Last Dance.” He felt that the documentary reignited old tensions and did not adequately acknowledge his contributions to the game or the context of his actions during his playing career. Thomas was also hurt by the suggestion that he was left off the 1992 Dream Team because no one, including Jordan, wanted to play with him.

In response to these grievances, Thomas announced that he is working on his own documentary. He revealed this plan on social media, stating that he would address many of the issues raised in “The Last Dance.” For Thomas, this documentary is not just about defending his legacy, but also about providing a more nuanced perspective on his career and the complexities of his relationships with other players, including Jordan.

In “The Last Dance,” Thomas was portrayed as one of Jordan’s primary adversaries during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The documentary emphasized the fierce rivalry between the Detroit Pistons and the Chicago Bulls, especially focusing on the “Bad Boys” era, during which Detroit’s physical style of play was notorious.

Jordan famously accused Thomas of poor sportsmanship, particularly for the Pistons’ refusal to shake hands after losing to the Bulls in the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals. This incident, along with other elements of their rivalry, painted Thomas in a negative light, portraying him as a villain in Jordan’s story.

Isiah Thomas‘ career is indeed illustrious. Before the 1990-91 season, Thomas had already won two NBA championships with the Pistons, was named Finals MVP in 1990, and was a 12-time All-Star. He was also a three-time All-NBA First Team selection and had helped lead the Pistons to three consecutive NBA Finals appearances. Despite these achievements, his post-1990 career was marked by fewer accolades, and he felt his contributions were overshadowed by the focus on his rivalry with Jordan.

By producing his own documentary, Thomas hopes to shed light on his true legacy and offer a more balanced view of his impact on the game. He aims to provide his side of the story, which has often been overshadowed by the dominant narrative centered around Michael Jordan. Whether this new project will shift public perception remains to be seen, but it is clear that Thomas is determined to ensure his legacy is remembered on his terms.
