When the 2021-22 NBA season began, not many would have guessed that Memphis Grizzlies would be one of the prime contenders to represent the Western Conference in the NBA Finals. Well, the Grizzlies have exceeded expectations and currently sit in the third spot in the West.
They have a record of 41-19 and are just 1.5 games behind the second seed Golden State Warriors. With the regular season in its final phase, they are expected to further improve their position.
But what is the reason behind the team's newfound success? To be honest, they have done almost everything correctly. Great offensive players with a well-balanced group of defenders is the perfect way to define the Grizzlies this season.
At the center of this success is none other than Ja Morant. The high-flying guard has had a breakout season, which has resulted in the Grizzlies dominating most teams.
Keeping the team's current form, one might wonder what is the ceiling of this group? As per NBA analyst Jay Williams, the Grizzlies are definitely going to the NBA Finals.
"You want my first prediction?" Williams said on the latest episode of Get Up. "I think the Memphis Grizzlies are going to the NBA Finals. ... CP3 being out this year for six to eight weeks with the hand injury. I know the Golden State Warriors are absolutely stacked, but I'm gonna tell you Ja Morant's team is 18-10 vs. teams that are .500 or better. I think the Memphis Grizzlies are going to be there when it counts, mark it down, I'm saying it right now."
Now that's what you call a bold prediction for a team. While it is true that the Grizzlies have been playing pretty well, the playoffs are a different story.
Each team plays in top gear in hopes of winning the NBA Championship. So for a team lacking that playoff experience, it could become an uphill battle in the postseason. But at the same time, it will be the perfect stage for Ja and co. to prove their talents to the entire world.
Let's see how the remaining season of the Grizzlies pans out and it will give everyone a much better idea of the full potential of the team.
