Klay Thompson is usually in the news cycle for his exploits on the basketball court. However, he has recently gone viral for another reason, as Youtuber BigDawsTv has impersonated him to get into Chase Center.
BigDawsTv ended up revealing that he got banned from Chase Center permanently for trespassing, which makes sense. Klay Thompson has recently spoken out on the situation claiming that when “you play stupid games, you get rewarded stupid prizes”. Michael Nowels of The Mercury News relayed the news.
A man who looked a lot like Klay Thompson made his way onto the Chase Center court Monday ahead of NBA Finals Game 5 and drilled a couple of 3-pointers.
The Warriors promptly banned him from Chase Center — because he was not Thompson. He was Dawson Gurley, a YouTuber from Arizona who has been seen before at Warriors games dressed like Thompson.
The real Klay Thompson said he saw the reports that his impersonator was banned from Chase Center.
“Oh man, poor guy,” the actual Thompson said Wednesday. “Just trying to get some good content.”
He added, “You play stupid games you get rewarded stupid prizes.”
“An individual falsely impersonated a Warriors player in a deliberate attempt to access unauthorized areas within Chase Center,” a Warriors spokesperson said in an email. “These actions have resulted in a lifetime ban from both Chase Center and Kaiser Permanente Arena.”
There is no doubt that this situation is funny to look at from the outside, but it is definitely concerning that the impersonator was able to get past security so easily and make it onto the court. Hopefully, that does not happen in the future.
As of right now, the real Klay Thompson is likely focused on helping his team win Game 6 against the Boston Celtics. We’ll see if he is able to do so, and if the Warriors win, it will mark their 4th championship in the Stephen Curry era.
