Kyle Kuzma couldn’t have chosen a better time to have his best season in the NBA. The 27-year-old is thriving in a bigger role with the Washinton Wizards and has averaged 21.4 PPG on 46.2% shooting from the field, with both being career-high marks.
His good play has led to quite a few teams being interested in trading for him, with his old team the Los Angeles Lakers also looking for a reunion. Even if a trade doesn’t happen this season, it doesn’t look like Kuzma is going to be in Washington for much longer, as he plans to decline his player option and become an unrestricted free agent.
“In an interview this week, following statements he made in the Athletic, Kuzma said he does not expect to sign an extension with the Wizards and plans to decline his player option for the 2023-24 season to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.”
Maybe this was put out so that the Wizards do try to trade him, as he wants to play in a bigger market to go with his big payday. They risk losing him for nothing if they don’t get a deal done before the deadline, so this is good news for potential suitors.
Kyle Kuzma Headed Back To The Lakers?
Kuzma was devastated when the Lakers sent him to the Wizards last year but the trade proved to be a blessing. It gave him more opportunities to shine and he has done just that this season. He recently stated that he was a shell of himself when he was on the Lakers, as he had to take a backseat to greats like LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
If the Lakers do manage to trade for him, it will be interesting to see how he’d fit with the two stars, after having had the ball in his hands a lot with the Wizards. Still, Kuzma would be an upgrade over what the Lakers have at the moment and they need more firepower if they are to make some noise this season.
