The Los Angeles Lakers have been at the end of truly heart-wrenching losses in recent times, the team has struggled to get the win in clutch situations. Their 1-point loss to the Philadelphia 76ers recently left LeBron James very frustrated but they managed to achieve a different result against the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night.

The Los Angeles Lakers were trailing going into the clutch but clawed their way back into the game. In the final 20 seconds of the game, with the Lakers trailing by one, Dennis Schroder stole the ball from Desmond Bane and made the layup at the other end, getting fouled in the process. He sunk the free throw which meant that when Brandon Clarke missed one to tie the game up, the Lakers walked away from the win.

This was an elite play from Schroder, whose return to the team has provided them with a reliable option in these situations. Dennis Schroder may not be the player he was a few seasons ago, but he can score with the best of them and he has the knack to be in the right place at the right time as he showed here. And LeBron James, whose frustrations have been so visible at different times this season, explained how the game came to be.

LeBron James Says The Schroder Play Unfolded Just As The Lakers Had Planned It

The Los Angeles Lakers have received a lot of criticism for their inability to run quality plays at the end of games. The Sixers game saw Russell Westbrook put up a shot at the end that had many scratching their heads. It seems the team has made a huge move away from a more haphazard style though, with James explaining after the game that the moment was all part of the Lakers’ plan.

“That’s what we drew up in the timeout. We said we were gonna go for the first trap, go for the steal.”

The team needs to do more than just rely on their stars, despite his massive performances, LeBron James obviously can’t carry them single-handedly anymore. But with Anthony Davis’ return now only a matter of time, the role players stepping up is a hugely positive sign for the team. The Lakers are at a crossroads as a team and holding on till Davis returns while improving some things could end up making them dark horses when the business end of the season arrives.
