The Dallas Mavericks made a recent blockbuster trade for Kyrie Irving, and that is a move that many believe could be a difference-maker for the franchise. Irving is an All-NBA talent, and pairing him with Luka Doncic could result in a championship this season.

Recently, Mark Cuban explained how Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving would fit together on the Dallas Mavericks. He stated his belief that this move could benefit both Irving and Doncic, noting that they “can play off each other” and could “put a ton of pressure on defenses” as a duo. Alex Kennedy of Basketball News relayed Cuban’s words.

“I think this is going to be great for both of them,” Cuban told Basketball News. “They can play off of each other and given that both can get where they want on the court, it’s going to put a ton of pressure on defenses.”

In theory, the basketball fit between Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving is perfect. Doncic is a top-tier offensive engine that is ball-dominant, which makes him a good match with a player like Irving, who can toggle between playing on and off the ball. It will be interesting to see if this works out for them, and perhaps we’ll see Kyrie Irving sign long-term with the franchise in this year’s free agency.

The Mavericks Landed Kyrie Irving Because Joe Tsai Didn’t Want To Trade Him To The Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers were a team that was heavily linked to Kyrie Irving prior to his trade to the Dallas Mavericks and were reportedly Irving’s preferred destination. However, the Mavericks managed to land Irving because one of governor Joe Tsai’s “objectives” was to send Kyrie Irving to a team that was not his first choice.

“The Nets also succeeded, as one source close to the process put it, in meeting one of the presumed objectives held by team owner Joe Tsai by sending Irving somewhere other than the Lakers — his preferred destination.”

It is unfortunate for the Lakers that they weren’t able to land their preferred star due to Joe Tsai’s preference in a trade. They did also have some concerns about the star’s off-court behavior, professionalism, and durability as well. It is clear that multiple factors were at play, all of which resulted in the Mavericks landing Irving.

Kyrie Irving will be a free agent in the summer, and perhaps the Los Angeles Lakers can make a run at him then, as they will have a lot of cap space due to the expiring contracts of Russell Westbrook and Patrick Beverley. However, there is also a chance that he will remain with the Mavericks, and we’ll see what happens in the future.
