Delaware Blue Coats guard Mac McClung becoming the first G League player to participate in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest has fans excited.

The 6-foot-2 McClung has been a headliner in the circuit for his stylish and riveting dunks and has been in the spotlight since his high school days in Virginia.

News of his invitation was reported by The Athletic’s Shams Charania and McClung later confirmed the news by responding to the NBA insider’s tweet.

Mac McClung – the athletic 6-foot-2 guard playing for G League’s Delaware Blue Coats – has accepted an invitation to be in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest at All-Star Weekend, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. McClung will be the first ever G League player in the NBA dunk contest.

The 24-year-old has appeared only twice in the NBA and won the G League Rookie of the Year last season when he suited up for the South Bay Lakers. Unless he’s signed by any NBA teams before the contest, McClung will be the first G League player to compete in the contest.

McClung was waived by the Warriors earlier and the Philadelphia 76ers signed him to an Exhibit 10 contract last year October.

The guard had a good season in the G League Showcase Cup games averaging 17.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 5.8 assists. He set the stage alight for Delaware by propping up a 44-point performance against the Raptors 905.

On one hand, it's cool that the g league is getting more show in these competitions. On the other hand, this really shows just how low the dunk contest has fallen https://t.co/ilIJCkOLYZ

McClung will face some stiff competition from Shaedon Sharpe and Kenyon Martin Jr., but the Blue Coats’ guard has shown that he can fly, and only time will tell if he can put on a show.

For those keen to watch McClung, the NBA Dunk Contest will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 8 p.m. ET at the Vivint Arena and broadcast on TNT.
