For a few weeks, the Brooklyn Nets were the team to beat in the NBA. But things have changed since Kevin Durant’s injury, which has ruled him out for several weeks now. During KD’s absence, the duo of Kyrie Irving and Ben Simmons was expected to get the job done for the team.
While Kyrie has done a great job of filling in the gaps left by Durant, the same cannot be said for Ben Simmons. Simmons has continued to struggle this season, and as a result, many have even urged the Nets to trade Simmons ahead of the NBA Trade Deadline.
But is it really possible for the Brooklyn Nets to get a fair deal for Ben Simmons after what they gave up for him in the trade last season?
Trading Ben Simmons Will Not Be Easy For The Brooklyn Nets Per NBA Insider
Ben Simmons has averaged an underwhelming 7.4 PPG, 6.5 RPG, and 6.4 APG so far this season. As a result, his trade value has taken a huge hit. So while there have been many proposed trades around Simmons, getting an actual deal done will certainly be a herculean job for the Nets.
Via The Athletic:
As for trading Simmons, good luck with that. The Nets would need to attach draft picks, not receive them, and — last I checked — they need a permission slip from the Rockets to do anything with any of their draft capital.
I just don’t see any cap situation right now on another roster where exchanging for Simmons would be helpful, and that won’t change unless either Simmons plays better or another player on a huge contract plays badly enough that trading him for Simmons becomes palatable. (Although, I must admit it would be hilarious to see a Simmons-Tobias Harris challenge trade that sends him back to Philly). I mean, would you trade Simmons to Dallas for Davis Bertans and Tim Hardaway, Jr.? Those are the types of deals you’re probably looking at.
John Hollinger of The Athletic interestingly wrote that the Nets will need to attach draft picks for Simmons, instead of receiving them. Keeping that in mind, the only fair deal he could come up with was with the Dallas Mavericks. But considering what the Nets gave up for him, the organization will hope that Simmons comes back to form, and trading him would be the last resort for them.
