If one were to ask most Brooklyn Nets fans who the biggest issue on the team has been during their current era, most would likely point to Kyrie Irving. The star point guard's decision not to get vaccinated cost him the ability to play a lot of games in the 2021-22 campaign. And the uncertainty that he brought to the locker room arguably cost them James Harden and led to the team failing in the playoffs.
However, Irving seems to be the only saving grace for the franchise at the moment, in a bizarre turn of events. Kevin Durant gave the Nets owner an ultimatum to fire Sean marks and Steve Nash if the organization wants to keep KD, and Joe Tsai seems to have sided with his management instead. So it looks quite likely that a trade will be found for Durant at some point moving forward.
Many have assumed that Durant leaving would mean Irving would be moved on too. But while the organization may still decide to do that, Shams Charania has reported on the Pat McAfee Show that the plan right now is for Irving to stay with the Nets.
"He opted into his contract, he's committed to the Nets and from everything I've been told, she's been doing everything behind the scenes. When you think about leadership, he's worked out with teammates this offseason, continued to have those conversations with Sean Marks and Steve Nash.
"From his side, he's in the last year of his contract so there's not much place for him to really rock the boat. I think what you're going to see from Kyrie Irving is just a level of high professionalism and I think that's what he's shown since he opted in.
"Now the other side is this, him and Kevin Durant are very close. This is something that everyone knows. And at the end of the day, whatever Kevin Durant wants to do, go through with the trade request, this way or that way, he's always going to support Kevin Durant as a friend and his happiness.
"But as far as this leaves him and the Nets, whether Kevin Durant is traded or not, I think Kyrie Irving has the opportunity to still be a Net and I think the likelihood is still that right now the plan is for him to still stay a Net going into training camp and the season."
This is an interesting turn of events, and it's quite hard to see why the Nets would keep Kyrie if they move on from KD. However, his willingness to stay with the team is an interesting curveball. Kyrie is hard to predict if this is true. This knot will take the franchise some time to unravel, though, and how they will go about it is a mystery to most people at this time.
