In today’s social media age, misinformation can spread like wildfire and a story recently went viral regarding Stephen Curry and his mother, Sonya Curry. It detailed how Sonya was mistreated at a Ferrari dealership and the lengths Stephen went to in response, but she took to Instagram recently to declare that the story was fake.

A look at the story itself should tell you it’s fake. It appears to have originated from a Facebook post, and it’s hard to believe that anyone actually believed it to be true.
In this fictional tale, Sonya (whose name was wrongly spelled as Sonia) went to a Ferrari dealership to buy a Ferrari Roma for Stephen. When she inquired about the vehicle, however, she was offered a tour of the pre-owned section. Another employee later told her the store was closing early due to a private event.
When Sonya informed them that she was Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry’s mother, they didn’t believe her and accused her of inventing celebrity connections. She then left the store in silence.
In response to this, Stephen was said to have launched a multi-pronged inquiry. He found out that people were treated differently at the dealership based on race and perceived status.
Stephen then supposedly worked in collaboration with civil rights lawyers, brand strategists, and Under Armour executives to launch a campaign, “Respect in Every Space.”
Stephen then brought the plan to that Ferrari dealership, whose executives pleaded that he keep silent on the matter. He wanted reform, though, and the protocols of “Respect in Every Space” have now been adopted by over 200 luxury retailers, according to the story.
Then comes a full-circle moment, with Stephen taking Sonya to that Ferrari dealership. She was greeted with flowers and was offered an apology, too, by a diverse management team. Sonya wasn’t there to buy a car, though, but to lead a training seminar for their corporate staff.
The story then talks about Stephen’s establishment of a partnership between his foundation and Ferrari to fund youth engineering and design programs in underrepresented communities.
This appears to be the plot for a Hollywood movie that would tank at the box office. This post has been shared over 34,000 times, and you wonder how many people have fallen for it by now.
The only positive here is that this wasn’t a malicious story from a Curry standpoint. Ferrari has been dragged through the mud, though, for discriminatory practices.
