The Curse Of Toronto Sports: When The City Won Its First Stanley Cup, World Series And NBA Championship, The Next Season Was Canceled

2 Min Read

The world of sports often gives us some interesting stories that can surprise a lot of fans. Throughout history, we have learned there are big coincidences with players, coaches and even teams. However, this year the NBA can give us a huge story to tell.

The city of Toronto added a new championship last June when the Raptors won their first NBA title in history. This is indeed a great feat for the Raptors and the city, but given the recent events in the NBA and the suspension of the 2019/20 season, this could also become one of the strangest coincidences in the history of the four major sporting leagues in the U.S.

Twitter user ‘matttomic’ revealed that the first times the city won a major title, the next season of a certain competition was canceled.

It all started in 1918 when Toronto won its first Stanley Cup; the next campaign, the NHL’s Stanley Cup Final was canceled due to the Spanish flu outbreak.

More recently, in the 1992/93 MLB campaigns, the Toronto Blue Jays won back-to-back World Series, bringing the first and the second title to the city. The next season, a work stoppage led the teams’ owner to cancel the rest of the 1994 season on Sep. 14. This strike lasted 232 days.

Now, during the 2018/19 NBA season, the Raptors won the first-ever NBA title in front of the Golden State Warriors, making more history for the city of Toronto. This brings us to today when the league has been suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak and could be completely canceled if things don’t change.

Just like it happened in the prior cases, once Toronto won its first major title, the next season was canceled. This is a big coincidence given the fact that it happened in different sports. One wonders why this has happened with only one city, but there is something about Toronto and the first times. That’s undeniable.
