NBA players are a fraternity. To make it to the league, you need to be one of the few best basketball players in the entire world. And that creates a bond among certain players. But that bond may have been broken between Vernon Maxwell and Vincent Askew, as the former encouraged other NBA stars to not lend Askew any money, as he owes him around $10,000.

“I want all my NBA brothers to know one thing about this one n***a that’s in our fraternity. He a sucka a** n***a. He ain’t s**t. If this n***a calls you and asks you for any type of money, this n***a is lying… ‘I’m going through this divorce’ and all this dumb sh*t.”

“The n***a’s name is Vincent Askew. Do not give that n***a f***ing dime… That n***a is broke. Do not f**K with this broke-a** n***a. This n***a owes me $10,000. And I want my money from you b*tch-a** n***a. If he calls anyone of my NBA brothers, man do not give that n***a a motherf**king dime.”

Vincent Askew was a second-round draft pick in the 1987 NBA Draft, being selected with the 39th pick by the Philadelphia 76ers.

He found himself out of the NBA after one season but would return in 1991 after a stint in Europe, signing with the Warriors. He would then go on to play in the NBA till 1998, playing for the Kings, Sonics, Nets, Pacers, Heat, and Trail Blazers, before ending his career in Venezuela.

He earned about $5.8 million from his NBA career earnings, which when adjusted for inflation, comes to about $12.1 million in today’s valuation. Clearly, he didn’t spend his money well if what Maxwell is alleging is true.

Maxwell played about 11 seasons in the NBA, earning $13.1 million in salaries, which would translate to about $26.7 million in today’s valuation.

If what Maxwell is alleging is true, then it is truly shameful behavior from Askew. It is not a bad thing to ask for money, or for any kind of help. But one should always try and clear their debts, especially with their friends. You should never try to take advantage of your friends, as Askew is allegedly doing.

It is good of Vernon Maxwell to warn other NBA players and make sure they don’t suffer the same financial woes that he has because of Vincent Askew. Hopefully, Askew makes things right and returns the money he owes to Maxwell.
