The 2024-25 NBA season has been a goldmine for the league’s bank account, thanks to a handful of players who just can’t seem to stay out of trouble. Whether it’s trash-talking refs, throwing hands, or venting frustrations at reporters, some stars have racked up fines that would make anyone’s head spin.

The fines for some major stars have piled up fast—and the price tags are eye-watering. Let’s dive into who’s lost the most money in fines this season.

Jimmy Butler – $5,692,568

Infractions: 14-Game Suspension/Conduct Detrimental To Team ($5,692,568)

Jimmy Butler’s stint with the Miami Heat went up in flames this season, leading to a jaw-dropping $5,692,568 fine after a 14-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team. In fact, Butler was suspended in three instances and he didn’t seem to care, trolling his team at the time

Frustrated by the Heat’s refusal to offer him a max extension, Butler decided to go full villain mode—putting in minimal effort on the court and causing a massive ruckus behind the scenes.

His visible disinterest and confrontations with teammates and coaches forced Miami’s hand, leading to his suspension and eventual trade to the Golden State Warriors, where he finally secured his coveted max deal. The saga was a messy divorce that emptied Butler’s pockets but may have revived his title hopes.

Bobby Portis – $2,862,701

Infractions: Suspension (25 Games)/PEDs ($2,858,701), 2x Technical Foul ($4,000)

Bobby Portis has found himself in hot water this season, hit with a staggering $2,862,701 in fines, most of which stemmed from a 25-game suspension for violating the NBA’s PED policy. Portis has vehemently maintained his innocence, claiming he was unaware of the supplement he took, but the league wasn’t having it.

Adding to his woes, Portis also racked up two technical fouls for an extra $4,000. The controversy has cast a shadow over his season, leaving fans and analysts questioning both his legacy and future in the league.

Joel Embiid – $1,146,778

Infractions: 3-Game Suspension ($1,063,778), 3x Technical Foul ($6,000), Obscene Gesture ($75,000), Ejection ($2,000)

Joel Embiid’s season has been a frustrating blend of injuries and drama, costing him $1,146,778 in fines. His biggest hit came from a 3-game suspension worth $1,063,778 for shoving a reporter in the locker room.

The Sixers’ star also seemed to embrace the villain role, picking up three technical fouls ($6,000), an obscene gesture fine ($75,000), and even a $2,000 ejection. Embiid’s antics, while entertaining when he has somehow made it on the court, have hurt both his wallet and the Sixers’ already rocky season.

Anthony Edwards – $436,393

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards (5) celebrates after hitting his 1,000th career three-point basket during the fourth quarter against the Houston Rockets at Target Center. Edwards broke the record for the youngest player in NBA history to reach 1,000 career three-point baskets.

Infractions: 1-Game Suspension ($242,393), 16x Technical Foul ($32,000), Ejection ($2,000), Fine/Criticism Of Official (75,000), 2x Obscene Gesture ($85,000)

Anthony Edwards has been unapologetically himself this season—and it’s cost him $436,393. Known for his candid and sometimes profane remarks, Edwards has made it clear he doesn’t want to be the NBA’s poster boy, mainly because of this reason.

His fines include a one-game suspension ($242,393), a staggering 16 technical fouls ($32,000), an ejection ($2,000), a $75,000 fine for criticizing officials, and two obscene gesture fines totaling $85,000. Edwards’ fiery personality and refusal to conform have kept fans entertained, even if it’s cost him a small fortune.

Jusuf Nurkic – $381,000

Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkic (20) against the Dallas Mavericks at Footprint Center.

Infractions: 3-Game Suspension/Fighting ($375,000), 2x Technical Foul ($4,000), Ejection ($2,000)

Jusuf Nurkic’s season has been a physical one—both in terms of his play and his fines. A three-game suspension for fighting set him back $375,000, with two technical fouls ($4,000) and an ejection ($2,000) rounding out his $381,000 total.

Nurkic’s toughness is part of his appeal, but his inability to keep his cool had proven costly for both him and the Suns, who were desperate to find some stability this season. Thankfully, the Suns traded the big man to the Hornets before the trade deadline and that is the end of that.

Zion Williamson – $257,280

Zion Williamson

Infractions: Suspension (1 Game)/Off-Court Violation ($253,280), 2x Technical Foul ($4,000)

Zion Williamson’s off-court issues have been nearly as concerning as his on-court inconsistencies. A one-game suspension for an off-court violation cost him $253,280, and two technical fouls added another $4,000 to the bill.

Zion’s conditioning and commitment have been hot topics, especially after the Pelicans suspended him, leading many to wonder if his long-term future in New Orleans is in jeopardy. At this point, we might be tired of hearing about Zion’s unavailability.

Terry Rozier – $149,242

Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier (2) controls the ball during the first quarter against the Utah Jazz at Delta Center.

Infractions: 1-Game Suspension/Fighting ($143,242), 2x Technical Foul ($4,000), Ejection ($2,000)

Terry Rozier’s $149,242 in fines this season is just the tip of the iceberg of his problems, with rumors swirling about potential match-fixing issues. A one-game suspension for fighting cost him $143,242, while two technical fouls ($4,000) and an ejection ($2,000) rounded out his fines.

With Rozier’s off-court distractions starting to pile up, his future in Miami and the NBA is looking uncertain. We have to wait and see what happens with the federal investigation around Rozier’s match-fixing allegations.

Amen Thompson – $135,586

Infractions: 2-Game Suspension/Fighting ($127,586), 2x Technical Foul ($4,000), 2x Ejection ($4,000)

Amen Thompson made waves this season, but not always for the right reasons. A heated altercation with Tyler Herro led to a two-game suspension worth $127,586, and two technical fouls ($4,000) alongside two ejections ($4,000) brought his total fines to $135,586.

Thompson’s aggressive style has made him a fan favorite, but he’ll need to find a way to keep his emotions in check if he wants to avoid further financial hits. However, seeing how Ime Udoka wants his team to play, perhaps Thompson’s edge is needed in Houston right now.

Isaiah Stewart – $127,000

Infractions: 1-Game Suspension/Flagrant Foul ($50,000), 10x Technical Foul ($25,000), Obscene Gesture ($50,000), Ejection ($2,000)

Isaiah Stewart’s reputation as one of the NBA’s enforcers is well-earned, and his $127,000 in fines this season proves it. A $50,000 suspension for a flagrant foul led the way, while 10 technical fouls added $25,000 more to the tally.

Stewart also got slapped with a $50,000 fine for an obscene gesture and a $2,000 ejection, showcasing his physical and emotional intensity. His aggressiveness might intimidate opponents, but it’s been a nightmare for his bank account.

LaMelo Ball – $104,000

Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball (1) reacts during the fourth quarter against the New Orleans Pelicans at Spectrum Center.

Infractions: Off-Court Violation ($100,000), 2x Technical Foul ($4,000)

LaMelo Ball’s flashy style on the court has come with a price—$104,000, to be exact. The bulk of his fines came from an off-court violation worth $100,000, while two technical fouls added another $4,000.

For a player with LaMelo’s popularity, these issues are a wake-up call to tighten up his behavior both on and off the court if he wants to remain the face of the Hornets’ franchise. It doesn’t seem that Ball is going to change anytime soon, however, because he is enjoying the persona of being an outspoken hipster.
