Player workload has become an important issue in the NBA, and that was proven true once against his week after news of the NBA’s latest possible rule change.

According to Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus, the NBA could completely alter the format of overtime games to follow a ‘target score’ instead of just adding an extra five minutes after regulation.

“A potential change could be the use of a target score, but just for overtime,” wrote Pincus. “That would prevent overlong broadcasts and overloading player minutes, like Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard’s playing 46 minutes in a double-overtime loss to the Sacramento Kings on Friday.”

This report comes in the aftermath of a double overtime game between the Kings and Clippers, which saw star athletes like Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, and De’Aaron Fox rack up over 40 minutes each.

With a target score in overtime, players wouldn’t have to endure playing 5 or 10 extra minutes after a hard-fought battle. And while some fans are all about this potential rule change, others believe it would be completely unnecessary.

Is The NBA Coddling Their Star Athletes?

The NBA is facing a lot of issues right now, with things like load management and effort in the All-Star game being common complaints among fans and experts. Still, for some reason, the league continues to prioritize player empowerment as they look to decrease the workload every season.

If you ask legends like Charles Barkley, the whole thing has gotten out of hand.

“Wait a minute, you gonna make $70M, and you can’t play basketball 3 or 4 days a week?’… They fly private,” said Chuck. “They got the best medical stuff ever created… People working in the steel mill every day, I’m pretty sure they tired too, but they go to work every day.”

Fans are getting fed up with the direction the NBA is taking and I have to wonder how it will affect the league moving forward.

As more fans and experts speak out about the current condition of the NBA and their coddling of million-dollar athletes, the ratings could take a massive hit as this year’s All-Star game numbers already showed signs of.

Now, Adam Silver is threatening to double down on lowering the player workload, and people just aren’t sure how to react to it.
