NBA Rumors: Cleveland Cavaliers Could Trade Collin Sexton
We're months away from the upcoming NBA season but the offseason has already begun for multiple teams. In fact, we can expect the next couple of weeks to be quite eventful when it comes to trades.
And, unsurprisingly, one of the first names that pop off when talking about potential trade is Collin Sexton's, as the Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly listening to offers for him, according to Sports Illustrated's Jeremy Woo:
"According to league sources, the Cavaliers have begun to explore trade options involving leading scorer Collin Sexton. Sexton, 22, is extension-eligible this summer, averaged 24.3 points per game last season, and appears likely to seek a maximum contract. Also eligible for an extension is 23-year-old center Jarrett Allen, who is also expected to command a lucrative deal. Cleveland. There’s belief around the league that Cleveland prefers to move on from Sexton, rather than sign him to a deal that would greatly inhibit their flexibility moving forward. The Cavs hold the No. 3 pick in the draft, and could end up selecting another guard, which could further expedite the process of a trade," Woo reported, as quoted by Outline.
Sexton made great strides as a scorer last season and showed that he's got the ability to put the ball through the hoop after struggling with efficiency over his first couple of seasons in the league.
But, the Cavaliers reportedly have doubts about his ability to coexist in the backcourt with Darius Garland, who's their building block right now. Also, with them likely taking another guard in the draft, Sexton would be the odd man out.
Sexton has often been scapegoated by the Cavaliers and criticized for his shot selection, but there's no denying that he's got the potential to being a dominant scorer if he's put in the right situation.
