With just a few days left in the month of January, the NBA trade season is in full swing now, and the Denver Nuggets are sitting happily atop the West standings.

While the Nuggets have no reason to make any panic moves, NBA Insider Jacke Fischer did reveal that they are ‘gauging’ the interest on one of their top bench scorers.

Bones Hyland, who is having an explosive second year for Denver, is expected to decline his $6.9 million player option for next season, and it has prompted the Nuggest to test his worth on the trader market.

After his name was discussed in trade conversations around last June’s NBA Draft, Denver begun gauging the trade value of second-year guard Bones Hyland, sources said. The Nuggets have a decision to make regarding the team’s backup point guard position, previously held by Monte Morris — who was traded to Washington this past offseason — as Hyland and standout free-agent acquisition Bruce Brown

Hyland can be a defensive liability at times, but his offensive potential could prove useful under the right conditions, and it’s no wonder why the asking price is pretty high.

Apparently, the Nuggets are seeking a rotation player and one first-round pick for Hyland.

In exchange for Hyland, the Nuggets have expressed an interest in defensive-minded frontcourt players, sources said, and will search for a player plus a first-round pick. Moving Hyland, while prepared for the risk of losing Brown in free agency, will also have Denver considering returns that could net another reserve point guard, sources said. As far as potential suitors, former Denver president Tim Connelly, now piloting the Timberwolves’ front office, is still considered a big supporter of Hyland.

The Nuggets are deep in almost every position, and trading Hyland could take them another step closer to their goals.

Nuggets Are The Deepest Team In The NBA

With Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, Michel Porter Jr., Aaron Gordon, Bruce Brown, and Bones Hyland (among others), the Nuggets have a strong and it’s been good enough to hold the top spot in the standings for most of the season.

If the Nuggets can just get one or two more guys on this team, we may have to start calling them the undisputed favorites to come out of the West. For now, they will have to keep searching for the next opportunity to improve.
