The Portland Trail Blazers aren’t having a very good season, but Jerami Grant has been a major bright spot for them since opening night.
Through 46 games this season, Grant is averaging 21.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game on 48% shooting. It’s been the best stretch of his career so far, and he’s been a perfect fit for the Trail Blazers.
Grant is set to become a free agent this summer and is bound to secure a massive payday from teams across the league. According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, Grant has yet to accept Portland’s latest extension offer which could be a hint that he will test the market as a free agent.
Jerami Grant became eligible for a contract extension with the Trail Blazers earlier this month, and Portland has offered the athletic forward his maximum possible deal of four years, $112 million, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Grant has not accepted the offer, sources said, largely because the Blazers can extend him a larger contract with an additional fifth year when free agency begins June 30.
With a 23-25 record this season, the Trail Blazers are still within striking distance of the playoffs, though winning a series would classify as a major upset.
Everything for the Blazers depends on what they do before the trade deadline, which will be their last opportunity to salvage this season before it’s too late to make a move.
Only Two Players Are ‘Untouchable’ For Blazers
Amid their recent struggles, the Blazers have made it clear they are willing to move on from most of their players to build a contender around Damian Lillard and Jerami Grant.
“The rest of the Blazers’ roster seems far more unsettled ahead of the Feb. 9 trade deadline. Portland has given rival teams the impression the Blazers are open to discussing the majority of their players, particularly Josh Hart and Jusuf Nurkic, sources said, as the franchise remains committed to building a playoff contender around Lillard…”
As presently constructed, the Trail Blazers aren’t coming out of the West if they even make the playoffs. But with Damian Lillard, they have a star worth fighting for, and we can expect the team to be aggressive in their pursuit to maximize Lillard’s prime.
Of course, re-signing Jerami Grant and securing him for the long haul should be the biggest priority for their front office right now.
