28-year-old Dennis Schroder is having an impressive run in Boston. In 33 minutes, the point guard is averaging 17.5 points and 4.9 assists per game.
Consequently, Schroder is guaranteed to secure a contract much bigger than the $5.8 million he signed with the Celtics months back. And now, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Boston could be leaning towards trading him instead of letting him walk for nothing.
“Rival teams expect the Celtics to be open to talks around guard Dennis Schroder, who inked a one-year deal with Boston in the offseason but has had a strong season that likely prices him out of a potential re-signing. Schroder is averaging 17.5 points, 4.9 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game this season.”
Thanks to a critical mistake on the part of Schroder, he has become a recognizable name around the NBA. Amid his stint with the Lakers, Schroder allegedly turned down an $84 million extension.
Bottom line, if Schroder wants to come back to the Lakers, it likely will be for significantly less than the $84 million he could’ve had earlier this year. My guess would be something closer to $55-60 million. That’s somewhere around $25 million he could’ve potentially lost by rolling the dice. Betting on yourself doesn’t always pay off.
Whether or not there’s any truth to that story, Schroder wasn’t offered anything close to that amount again and eventually settled for Boston’s $5 million offer.
The fans and media proceeded to bash him for weeks, but it seems he’s putting at least some of his critics to bed.
As a main guard in the rotation, Schroder has provided a major scoring punch for the Celtics while being one of their more consistent players.
Going forward, it’s hard to say where Schroder will end up. But for a guy who was clowned so aggressively not too long ago, he has certainly come a long way.
