The Miami Heat are not having a good season by their lofty standard, given what the trio of Jimmy Butler, Tyler Herro, and Bam Adebayo has already achieved. Roster deficiencies have been costing the Heat games, especially when they lack depth in the frontcourt and have shooters on big contracts that no longer make shots.
Heavy Sports has revealed that an unnamed Eastern Conference executive believes Duncan Robinson could thrive with the Atlanta Hawks if the Heat decides to make a move to acquire John Collins and use Robinson’s contract as salary filler.
“Man, Robinson needs a change of scenery,” the executive said. “Just getting him somewhere else and letting him play, let him build up his confidence again—he can be a dangerous floor-spacer for a team like Atlanta with Trae [Young] and [Dejounte] Murray. The Heat really like the potential Jovic has but they are an old team, they need to win now and Collins fills a huge need for them. But Atlanta does not want to fall off the map and taking a risk on Robinson, that is too much of a gamble.” (h/t Heavy)
Robinson was crucial for the Heat during their run to the 2020 Finals but has struggled to remain that consistent over the last 2 seasons. For a shooting specialist with very poor defensive skills, Robinson can’t be played unless he is hitting shots.
Can The Hawks Use Duncan Robinson?
The Hawks are missing an element of extra spacing on the roster after trading away Kevin Huerter and probably regretting it now, given the success he’s having with the Sacramento Kings. Robinson on the Heat is the only shooting threat but him on the Hawks would definitely open up more space on the court for him.
The Hawks need to remedy their guard defense, so Duncan would be a horrible fit for that. However, having someone with his natural shooting ability can be very valuable for a contending team. It’d be a risk, given the years of contract Duncan is still owed, made the Jazz disqualify the Heat from trade talks. But if it works here, it will be amazing for Duncan and both teams, especially if the Heat acquires John Collins.
