Trae Young is one of the league’s best point guards, and there’s no doubt that he is playing at a high level for the Atlanta Hawks. As of right now, Trae Young is putting up 27.0 PPG, 2.9 RPG, and 9.9 APG.
Previously, it was reported that there is a chance that Trae Young could end up requesting a trade from the Atlanta Hawks. A potential destination has recently been revealed by a report from Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report, who suggested he could end up going to the Los Angeles Lakers due to his ties to Klutch Sports.
“I think Trae will want out after the season,” one NBA source said. “The Hawks probably try to get out of John Collins and others by the deadline, but Trae’s a long shot. Maybe the [Lakers] in July with his ties to Klutch [Sports].”
There is no doubt that Trae Young would be a good addition to the Los Angeles Lakers if he became available. Though there would be obvious hurdles for the Lakers in acquiring him due to them having limited draft compensation, previous reports suggested that they could manipulate the trade market for a player like Bradley Beal. Perhaps they could do the same for Trae Young.
It remains to be seen if Trae Young will end up on the Los Angeles Lakers. Though it is clearly an unlikely outcome as of right now, the fact that this was reported suggests that there’s a non-zero chance of it happening.
The Los Angeles Lakers Will Only Make A Trade With Both Picks If It Makes Them A Contender
Due to the Lakers’ relative lack of future assets, it only makes sense for them to move both of their first-round picks in the right deal. In fact, Rob Pelinka stated that the team would only follow through with moving their picks if that trade gets them a championship.
I think the calculus for the Lakers is to win a championship or not. . I said this at the beginning of the season, if there’s an opportunity to get all the way to the end and win a championship, there’s no resource we’ll hold onto if we feel like that’s there.
There is no doubt that this mindset makes sense. If a trade won’t immediately help them win a championship, then it is more logical to wait for a trade that does make them a team that is on that level. The Lakers only have one chance to get this right, and getting a real difference-maker is key.
It remains to be seen what the Los Angeles Lakers do ahead of the trade deadline. Even if they don’t move their first-round picks, Rob Pelinka has already stated that the team is not done making moves, so perhaps we’ll see more minor moves ahead of February 9th.
