With just days to go before this week’s NBA trade deadline, the Miami Heat are still looking for a solution regarding their disgruntled veteran star, Jimmy Butler. According to the latest intel from ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Butler has essentially blocked multiple trades that would have sent him to contending teams.
“Butler’s obsession with getting to the Phoenix Suns is bizarrely admirable. He has torched his relationship with the Heat and hurt the team’s season. He has also blocked trade options that would be good fits, where he could have potentially gotten paid and been on a contender. But he’s the rare difference-maker who can tilt the outcome of a playoff series and that comes with a lot of power. Butler is trying to use it.”
The Luka Doncic trade has disrupted the NBA’s power balance and now it seems like no players are safe from the trade block. In the case of Jimmy Butler, however, he still has power over his next NBA contract and he’s trying everything he can to make his dreams a reality.
Butler had been a loyal member of the Heat for six years, averaging 22.4 points per game while leading them to two NBA Finals appearances. He and his former co-star Bam Adebayo set a culture of winning in the organization that has become legendary in the NBA. But after a falling out between Butler and team President Pat Riley, their relationship has deteriorated beyond repair.
Butler, 35, is averaging 17.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game on 54.0% shooting this season. But amid a dysfunctional period of turmoil within the franchise, Butler has only played in 25 games this season and is now suspended indefinitely as the Heat pursue a trade for the 6x All-Star.
As one of the top two-way players on the market, various teams have expressed interest in Butler, including the Golden State Warriors, Memphis Grizzlies, and even the Los Angeles Lakers. But out of all the interested parties, it’s the Phoenix Suns who are firmly in the lead for Jimmy thanks to the 5x All-Defensive star himself making it known that it’s the only place he wants to play.
With Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, and Suns already have the blueprint for making a major splash in the Western Conference. For Butler, who turned 35 in September, all he wants is to win at all cost and he feels like the Suns give him the best chance to do that.
With a player option for the 2025-26 season, Butler can opt out and sign with a new team as early as this summer, which means he holds all of the leverage in these ongoing trade talks. As it stands, Butler remains dead-set on going to the Suns, even if it means snuffing out an opportunity to land with a contender like the Warriors or Bucks.
Of course, without any Riley-approved offers, the Heat are still searching for the right trade and they are running out of time before this week’s NBA deadline halts any roster moves. With Butler blocking several potential trades already, he hasn’t made it easy for his team to find a deal but he doesn’t want to land just anywhere for the final stretch of his NBA career.
