Russell Westbrook was once an MVP-level player with the Oklahoma City Thunder, and there’s no doubt that he will be a future Hall of Famer. However, Russell Westbrook has definitely not lived up to expectations during his time with the Los Angeles Lakers.

On a recent episode of The Hoop Collective podcast, Brian Windhorst claimed that the Los Angeles Lakers are “being cautious” about making any win-now moves because the Russell Westbrook trade did not go as expected. It is clear that the team is trying to balance winning in the now and having assets in the future.

Brian Windhorst: After they made one of the more disastrous trades in the history of the NBA. Even though Russ is playing better this year, they are afraid… afraid is probably not the word that Rob Pelinka would use. They are being very cautious about making a second trade that could really kneecap them.

There is no doubt that a win-now trade could potentially hamper the Los Angeles Lakers in the future. However, perhaps a win-now trade could still be worth it for the team, especially if it involves not moving any draft picks.

The Los Angeles Lakers Are Saving Their Picks To Trade For A Star-Level Player

The Los Angeles Lakers have been playing better as of late, and it could make sense to go all-in on the LeBron James and Anthony Davis duo if it’s the right move. A previous report suggested that the Los Angeles Lakers are trying to save their picks to trade for stars such as Zach LaVine and Bradley Beal.

The belief in some rival front offices persists that the Lakers are saving those picks for a splashier trade target such as Washington’s Bradley Beal or Chicago’s Zach LaVine. How realistic is either pursuit, though? Both players, like Davis, are plagued by daunting injury concerns, which only adds to the angst attached to L.A. potentially surrendering the two best trade assets in its possession for the remainder of the decade. This much is clear: We will be talking about the Lakers and their situation nonstop for the next month … and probably beyond the Feb. 9 deadline.

It remains to be seen if the Los Angeles Lakers do make a move before the headline. Their hesitancy to move any first-round picks is well noted, but it is clear that they have the ability to add talent if they do surrender that draft compensation.

Hopefully, we see the Los Angeles Lakers make a move, whether it involves the picks or not. There are definitely some solid deals to be had on the trade market, and we’ll see what happens in the future.
