Contrary to what everybody believed before the start of the season, Kemba Walker's tenure with the New York Knicks hasn't been as pleasant as some expected. The talented point guard has struggled to make a big impact on the New Yorkers, having a hard time finding his position on the roster.
In the first months of competition, he was removed from the rotation, until he won his position back thanks to his big performances. Still, that hasn't been enough for Tom Thibodeau to consider Kemba a key player on the Knicks.
With the trade deadline arriving in less than a week, the Knickerbockers are rumored to be looking to ship some players away. Besides Julius Randle, Kemba appears to be on his way out of the Madison Square Garden. According to Marc Berman of The New York Post, the Knicks are trying to find a trade partner to ship Kemba and see what they can get in return.
According to a source, the Knicks would like to trade him by the deadline. That would likely open up a spot for the recently acquired Cam Reddish, because Alec Burks would slide into the point-guard role.
One NBA source said he doubts any team would be willing to give up anything beyond a future second-round draft pick for Walker.
“It’s not that a team won’t want him, but I don’t see [anyone] giving up something valuable,’’ the source said. “I can definitely see a team rolling the dice with Kemba.’’
The Knicks are underperforming this season. After shocking the world last campaign, they have regressed their level, ranking 12th in the Eastern Conference standings with a 24-28 record. Some moves need to be made if they want to recover their best form, and it seems like parting ways with Kemba is one of them.
It'll be interesting to see what team pulls the trigger in a move for Walker, but there's no doubt he can still be impactful on a contender. We're six days away from the 2022 trade deadline and this is a name we have to keep an eye on.
