Shooting guard Anthony Edwards is one of the best young players in the league today, and there is no doubt that his style of play has gotten him many admirers among players and fans alike. With that being said, there is a chance that Anthony Edwards will ask out from the Minnesota Timberwolves at some point in his contract. If the team doesn’t have playoff success, then that is a scenario that could occur. If Edwards does ask for a trade, then the New York Knicks are one potential trade destination. Here is a trade scenario that could potentially occur in 2024 free agency.

New York Knicks Receive: Anthony Edwards

Minnesota Timberwolves Receive: RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley (Sign-And-Trade), Quentin Grimes, 2024 First-Round Pick (NYK), 2025 First-Round Pick (NYK), 2028 First-Round Pick (NYK)

There is no doubt that getting Anthony Edwards would be a coup for the New York Knicks. He is a young superstar in the making. Here is why this deal makes sense for both the Knicks and the Timberwolves.

The New York Knicks Land A Star Shooting Guard

As good as Jalen Brunson is right now, it is unlikely that he will be the No. 1 option on a championship-level team. Getting Anthony Edwards would give the team a true No. 1 option, and he would likely enjoy playing in a bigger market.

During the 2022-23 season, Anthony Edwards averaged 24.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game. He has shown that he is a solid scorer that can rise in the playoffs, and his perimeter defense is elite as well. Any team in the league would love to have Edwards as their franchise cornerstone, and if he were to request a trade, the New York Knicks would likely exhaust all avenues to try and acquire him.

The advantage of acquiring a young star like Anthony Edwards is that the New York Knicks would have time to build a true championship-level roster around him. They wouldn’t necessarily be immediately forced into win-now mode and could take a year to try and see what the best way to build around Edwards is.

There is no doubt that the New York Knicks would have to give up a lot of assets in this scenario. Giving up three young players and three first-round picks is a huge ask for any player. However, the price here is absolutely worth it. Anthony Edwards looks like he could easily become the best shooting guard in the league, and generally, any time a team gets a superstar or a player who is close to being one, they’ve won the deal.

The Minnesota Timberwolves Get A Good Trade Package For Anthony Edwards

If Anthony Edwards were to request a trade, he would likely command a huge package that features young players and draft compensation. The Minnesota Timberwolves wouldn’t let Edwards go just for any package. Luckily for the Knicks, they have the means to get almost any player in the league, including Edwards.

The key player that the Minnesota Timberwolves would get in this scenario is RJ Barrett, who is a two-way wing that is capable of being a secondary or tertiary scorer for a franchise. Last season with the Knicks, Barrett averaged 19.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.8 assists, albeit in an inefficient manner (44.4/31.0/74.0 splits). However, he is still a good overall player that can contribute to winning.

The other players in this deal are Immanuel Quickley and Quentin Grimes. Quickley profiles as a shooting guard who can play both ends of the floor and provide some ball handling and shot creation, with his role likely being the sixth man. Last season, Immanuel Quickley averaged 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, while shooting 37.0% from 3PT range. Meanwhile, Quentin Grimes is the quintessential 3 and D wing player and has shown the ability to guard multiple positions. Quentin Grimes put up 11.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game for the Knicks last season while shooting 38.6% from 3PT range.

The three first-round picks in this deal would be the draft compensation that is required to get a deal done. This amount factors in both Anthony Edwards’ age and long-term contract.

Overall, the Minnesota Timberwolves would get the perfect package to kick start their rebuild if Anthony Edwards wants to leave. The young players in this deal could usher in the next era of Timberwolves basketball. While there is no way to fully recover from losing a player like Edwards, this package would definitely keep the team afloat.

Getting Anthony Edwards Is A No-Brainer For The New York Knicks

Any franchise that needs a superstar and wants a long championship window should try to get Anthony Edwards if he ever becomes available. The New York Knicks are a franchise that fits the bill, and they already have some quality veterans such as Josh Hart and Donte DiVincenzo who can contribute to winning even if their young players are moved.

As of right now, Anthony Edwards has not yet requested a trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves. However, things can easily change in the future. The Timberwolves have not managed to get out of the first round during Edwards’ tenure, and if that continues, it is easy to see the shooting guard asking for a trade. If Anthony Edwards does request a trade, then the New York Knicks should pounce at the opportunity to get him. Edwards and the Knicks are a perfect fit for one another, and we’ll see if Edwards ever ends up joining the franchise.
