  • The Sixers offered James Harden a two-year contract with a team option
  • Despite the offer, Harden wanted to be traded to the Los Angeles Clippers
  • Harden opted into his contract to work around the Clippers’ salary cap restrictions

Amidst ongoing trade rumors, James Harden’s relationship with the Philadelphia 76ers took an unexpected turn as reports revealed the team’s original plan to retain the star player.

The Sixers were prepared to offer Harden a two-year contract with a team option. However, this approach didn’t align with Harden’s aspirations, leading to the current trade discussions.

According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, Harden, and the Sixers couldn’t meet eye to eye on a long-term contract:

“To my understanding, the best the Sixers would’ve considered was something along the lines of a two-year deal, which would’ve included a team option, and that type of short-term commitment wasn’t going to appeal to Harden.”

“Harden knew the team he wanted to go to, the Clippers, and the only way to get there and get his money was to opt in because of their restrictions with the salary cap. There’s still been dialogue between the two teams.”

“As for Harden and Daryl Morey, it’s been a while since they’ve spoken, and their relationship is done.”

As the trade discussions continue, it’s clear that James Harden remains a highly coveted player both by the Sixers and other teams. He averaged 21.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 10.7 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game.

Why Are The Clippers Hesitant To Trade For James Harden?

As trade talks heat up, it becomes evident that the Clippers are taking a cautious approach. Despite the mutual interest between Harden and the Clippers, they are showing reluctance to offer certain key players in the trade package.

The Clippers are reportedly hesitant to include Terance Mann and Norman Powell in the trade package for James Harden. Both Mann and Powell are highly sought-after players, and the Clippers are reluctant to part ways with them, especially given their potential for the future.

Another factor influencing the Clippers’ hesitancy is the assessment of James Harden’s impact and age. Harden is 33 years old and has been on three teams since 2020, raising concerns about his long-term performance.

The Clippers are carefully evaluating how Harden would fit into their system and whether he can sustain his high-level play in the years to come.
