As the Phoenix Suns aggressively pursue Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler ahead of the February trade deadline, a key piece of their roster has been deemed untouchable. According to NBA insider Evan Sidery, rookie wing Ryan Dunn will not be included in any trade package for Butler. The Suns view Dunn as a cornerstone for their present and future, despite Butler’s potential to elevate the team to immediate contention.

Ryan Dunn has emerged as one of the most promising young players in Phoenix’s rotation. Drafted late in the first round, the 22-year-old rookie has exceeded expectations with his defensive versatility and high basketball IQ. Averaging 7.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and shooting 46% from the field, Dunn has seamlessly transitioned into the Suns’ starting lineup, replacing Bradley Beal, who now comes off the bench.

Dunn’s defensive impact has been particularly crucial for the Suns, who have struggled to maintain consistency on that end of the floor. While the team ranks 22nd in defensive rating (115.3), Dunn’s presence in the starting lineup improves their defensive efficiency to 112.2, which would place them 13th in the league.

His ability to guard multiple positions and his knack for making timely plays have provided a much-needed balance to a lineup featuring offensive stars like Kevin Durant and Devin Booker.

Despite Jimmy Butler’s proven track record as a playoff performer and his desire to join Phoenix, the Suns are hesitant to part ways with Dunn. The rookie is seen as a long-term piece who complements the team’s core players while providing defensive stability and untapped offensive potential.

Butler, while still a formidable player, is 35 years old and on the tail end of his prime. Adding him would undoubtedly improve the Suns’ chances in the short term, but it would come at the cost of sacrificing a young talent like Dunn, who could play a vital role for years to come. Additionally, Butler’s $52.4 million player option for next season and his desire for a max contract extension complicate the Suns’ financial flexibility.

Phoenix has already taken steps to position themselves for a potential blockbuster deal by acquiring three first-round picks in a trade with the Utah Jazz. These assets, combined with Bradley Beal’s massive contract, could form the foundation of a multi-team trade to land Butler. However, the Suns remain adamant about retaining Dunn in any scenario, believing his contributions on both ends of the court outweigh the immediate boost Butler might provide.

Butler has made it clear he wants to be traded to the Suns. NBA insider Brian Windhorst recently stated that Butler’s “No. 1 goal” is to land in Phoenix. Butler has even dropped subtle hints, such as wearing Suns-themed sneakers during games, further fueling speculation about his intentions.

While the Suns are actively exploring options to acquire Butler, the deal remains complicated. Other teams are reportedly reluctant to assist in creating a superteam in Phoenix, which would disrupt the league’s parity. Butler’s arrival would not only improve the Suns’ defense but also bring a winning mentality and clutch factor that could elevate the team in high-stakes playoff matchups.

This strategy aligns with the Suns’ broader approach to team building. By prioritizing young, versatile players like Dunn, Phoenix is attempting to balance its current championship aspirations with the need to remain competitive in the future.

The Suns are walking a fine line between making a bold move for a veteran star and preserving the young talent that could sustain their success. With Butler reportedly keen on joining Phoenix, the Suns may still find a way to acquire him without including Dunn in the deal. As the trade deadline approaches, all eyes will be on the Suns’ front office to see how they navigate these high-stakes negotiations.
