The Phoenix Suns are the latest team to make a move this season after sending their 2031 first-round pick to the Utah Jazz in exchange for three future firsts.
“The Phoenix Suns are trading their 2031 unprotected first to the Utah Jazz for three first-round picks”, wrote Shams. “The Suns are acquiring the least favorable firsts in 2025 of Cleveland/Minnesota, 2027 of Cleveland/Minnesota/Utah and 2029 of Cleveland/Minnesota/Utah.”
The deal, which was announced by Shams Charania on Tuesday, effectively opens up the next six drafts for the Suns while also tripling their draft asset pool in any potential trade talks.
Besides a few notable prospects, there isn’t anyone game-changing who can improve the Suns’ current situation in the draft. But as a featured team in the Jimmy Butler sweepstakes, this latest move opens up a way that they can acquire him by using their newfound picks in a two or three-team trade.
Now that the Heat are having “productive conversations” for Jimmy, the Suns can have something more appealing to offer and stave off any competition on the trade market.
Meanwhile, the Jazz are trading in some of their own assets in a bet that the Suns will be so bad by 2031 that the pick will have extremely high odds of landing high in the lottery. Only time will tell if they are right but the Jazz have more than enough picks to spare.
For now, it’s the Suns who are the major winners here. They get a fresh batch of picks to help address their dire situation. Even if they don’t get Butler, the picks will surely help Mat Ishbia continue to fill out a roster capable of making a run in the West.
