The Dallas Mavericks will field a relatively shorthanded frontcourt rotation heading into Monday night’s matchup against the Brooklyn Nets. However, Jason Kidd provided a key update on Anthony Davis and PJ Washington ahead of the game.

Both Davis and Washington were with the team during the pre-game warmups, though only Washington participated. Jason Kidd began by addressing Davis’ condition, specifically addressing when the superstar big man will require surgery on his left hand.

“I think that’s sometime this week that he’ll talk to the doctors, but there is no schedule, no timetable when he’s gonna make that announcement.”

Anthony Davis sustained a left hand injury during the game against the Jazz, which eventually led to a loss for Dallas. Although his condition seemed serious, Davis was spotted without a sling or any heavy wrapping during the pre-game shootaround, though this may not be indicative of anything significant.

Jason Kidd continued by providing a positive update on the timeline for PJ Washington’s return.

He’s doing court work, and hopefully he’s back in a week,” Kidd stated.

Washington has been out of the rotation with an ankle sprain since the game against the Houston Rockets on Jan. 3. Considering that the team has notched a 1-2 record since, it is evident that losing Washington has had an impact on Dallas’ performance.

Regardless, the future seems more promising for the Mavericks, as at least one of their starters is due to return to the rotation. Given that the team is scheduled to play five games until Washington’s potential return, however, Dallas will need to fend for itself.

Can Jason Kidd Keep Dallas’ Playoff Dreams Alive?

Jason Kidd’s task as head coach for the Mavericks has been full of challenges this season. Despite having immensely talented players on its roster, the injuries sustained by its star players have prevented this team from living up to its true potential.

With a 14-25 record, the Mavericks sit in 12th place in the Western Conference. Now, with Davis expected to miss more time, Dallas’ chances of making the playoffs this year seem slim.

Regardless, the Mavericks are likely to sustain their efforts to rack up wins. With Cooper Flagg embracing his role as the driving force behind the team, and considering that they are only three games behind the Phoenix Suns in 10th place, the Mavs will attempt to remain competitive.

The upcoming game against the Brooklyn Nets seems to be a solid opportunity for the team to notch a crucial win. With the need to develop a winning habit again, the Mavericks will look to players like Flagg, Max Christie, and Klay Thompson to play vital roles.
