It is safe to say that Dallas Mavericks fans are not happy with the franchise’s decision to trade Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. Several fans came to the American Airlines Center, the Mavericks’ arena, and created a protest shrine to Doncic, with a group of fans even bringing a coffin to signify the death of their franchise and their fandom going forward.

This trade has not gone down well with Dallas Mavericks fans at all, as they cannot understand why the franchise would agree to trade a player like Luka Doncic, who was a perennial All-NBA player and MVP candidate who looked like he would be leading their franchise for the next decade.

Mavs fans are far from the only group that were surprised by this move. Luka Doncic himself couldn’t believe the news and was taken aback by the announcement. There still isn’t a lot of clarity on why the Mavericks decided to pull the trigger on the biggest trade in NBA history, but we have had some news trickle in.

Mavericks GM Nico Harrison seemed to suggest that the move was done because of Doncic’s defense. It was reported that the Mavericks didn’t believe they could win an NBA championship with Doncic at the helm. Given that Luka was instrumental in their NBA Finals run less than 12 months ago, it is hard to see how that makes any sense.

Doncic himself never demanded a trade from the Mavericks, as he was seemingly happy with the franchise. In a statement released after the trade, Doncic seemed very thankful to the Mavericks fanbase that showed him an immense amount of love over the last few years. With the reactions from their fanbase, it is clear that the love was genuine, as they are disconsolate after this trade.
