The Dallas Mavericks lost in the final seconds of a thrilling game against the Denver Nuggets, after Michael Porter Jr. sunk a dagger to help the Nuggets get the win. With a final score of 122-120, it was an incredibly close game, with Kyrie Irving putting on a vintage performance in the loss, with 43 points (17-22 FG), five rebounds, and five assists.
Mavericks fans were devastated by the loss, as it came down in the final seconds, and they couldn’t reward Irving’s incredible outing with a win. It was a difficult night for the fanbase, as they lost their second game in a row. Some fans even called out the officiating, as they felt it cost the Mavericks the game.
“The Mavericks are terrible, I’m just not moved by them. As soon as they lost DJJ, I immediately knew they weren’t a serious team.”
“Nuggets-Mavericks just finished one of the craziest games I’ve ever seen in person. Hard to overstate how good Kyrie Irving was. And yet, Denver has Jokic…”
“I’m so sick and tired of refs deciding games for the Mavericks.”
“The Mavericks have been playing an incredibly disappointing brand on both ends but I think they’ll be ok.”
“Mavericks lose this game it’s on Luka jacking up a 30-footer when Kyrie can’t miss.”
“It’s fair to say both stars made boneheaded decisions most likely because their head coach can’t draw up a play.”
“The Dallas Mavericks should file an official complaint against the NBA officials and boycott games until they get treated fairly. This game against the Nuggets was ridiculous again. That makes it 2 games in a row where one-sided officiating turned a Dallas blowout into a loss.”
“Of course, the Mavericks waste this insane Kyrie game.”
“I’m sick of Luka constantly being hurt. I’m sick of Kidd being f**king stupid. I’m sick of sh**ty calls by refs. I’m sick of a team that went to the f**king finals last year being not even mid. Being f**king awful.”
“That was on Luka. That last lazy a** possession where he just shot from the logo was a dumb mistake.”
“Jokic is so so so so much better than Luka its insane.”
Mavericks fans were clearly unhappy with Luka Doncic taking the final shot of the game, especially with Irving having the hot hand. Some accused him of trying to play hero ball and chucking up a shot when there was a player who was doing better and could have helped them win the game.
Doncic had a decent game, despite the loss, putting up 24 points (9-19 FG), with nine rebounds and nine assists. However, his five turnovers in the game proved to be very costly, as the Nuggets were able to capitalize several times for second-chance buckets.
Nikola Jokic had yet another monster stat line, as he put up 37 points (13-21 FG), 18 rebounds, and 15 assists in the big win. Michael Porter Jr had 17 points (6-11 FG), including the game-winner, along with seven rebounds and four assists. Jamal Murray had a tough night, but still put up good numbers, with 18 points (7-17 FG), two rebounds, and six assists.
Where Do Mavericks Go From Here?
With their second consecutive loss now in the books, the Mavericks currently have a record of 5-4 in the Western Conference. They currently sit 10th in the West and could be pushed further out of the playoff mix if their poor form continues.
This is far from the level we expected from the Mavericks coming into the new season. With the signing of Klay Thompson, and adding him to a roster that just went to the NBA Finals, the expectation was that the Mavs would be one of the best teams in the West.
But so far, that hasn’t been the case. Of course, it is still early in the season, and the Mavericks have time to turn things around.
But time is of the essence, as they need to improve their form and build momentum as they go later into the season. The Mavericks will play the in-form Golden State Warriors next, as they look to reverse their fortunes in the first NBA Cup game this Tuesday.
