The Dallas Mavericks are paying the karmic cost of trading away a 25-year-old franchise cornerstone when he wanted to stay this season. Since trading Luka Doncic away, everything has gone wrong for the Mavs, and Anthony Davis has not been able to bring joy to the widely depressed Mavericks fans to this day.
Davis got hurt in his Mavericks debut at the beginning of February and hasn’t played in six weeks. Even though the Mavs are focused on tanking to improve their pick with Kyrie Irving out for the season, according to ESPN, Davis seems motivated to return to the court against the franchise’s ideal wishes.
“They sent him down there to practice and get some five-on-five work. This week, he’s really testing that. He’s steadfast in his determination to want to return this season, maybe even next week. Despite the fact that there are people in the Mavericks organization that have tried to talk him out of it by saying the risk-reward isn’t there. There are people trying to shut him down for the season, but he’s not having it.”

Davis averages 26.0 points, 16.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists, and 3.0 blocks as a Maverick, mainly because he played just one game.
He picked up a groin injury after three-quarters of his Dallas debut against the Houston Rockets, rushing himself back from an adductor strain that caused him to hurt his groin and miss the last 6+ weeks of basketball action.
He’s a high-caliber winning player, which explains why Dallas doesn’t want him to play. Obviously, there is a major risk of reinjury or hurting something else which could ruin their next season. In addition, playing Davis won’t be an effective way to improve their pick either.
Outside Kyrie, Dante Exum, and Olivier Maxence-Prosper, all other currently injured Mavs are expected to return sometime before the end of the season. If the Mavericks still hold onto the No. 10 seed by the time Davis is ready, they might as well start clearing others and compete for the Playoffs by winning the Playoffs.
It won’t be easy but it’ll be the best way for Davis to prove to Mavericks fans that he can be a major winning factor for them. However, an asset-light team like Dallas needs to maximize what they do have, which means they need to improve the value of the pick they control this year to land a real star.
Whether or not that happens remains to be seen, but it’s exciting to think Davis might be back on the court in a Mavs jersey before the season is over.
