In a chat on the Two Cents podcast, 4x champion Draymond Green opened up on his biggest failure with the Warriors. According to Green, his falling out with Jordan Poole is the biggest blemish of his career so far.
“One of my biggest failures as a vet was with what happened with Jordan Poole,” said Green. “And it took me to go through that failure with Jordan Poole, who was someone who came in and chose his locker to be next to me because he wanted to learn from me. He was someone that I would spend time with, that I would pour into, and I f**ked it all up. I haven’t felt that miserably by most things in my life. And so that was one of my biggest failures. It taught me a ton and it showed me how to be a better vet for Jonathan Kuminga, how to be a better vet for Moses Moody. But I had to go through that to learn.”
Draymond Green has helped the Warriors immensely over the years, but he’s also hurt them on several occasions. On the court, as one of the best defenders in the league, he makes a noticeable impact by being a pest and setting the tone for his teammates in the frontcourt.
As a 4x All-Star, 4x champion, and former Defensive Player of the Year, Draymond’s resume is undeniable and his list of accomplishments has made him well-respected in the basketball world.
But even as a core member of the Warriors dynasty, he’s made some costly mistakes over the years that have earned him a lot of heat. One of his worst moments was in the 2016 Finals when he got suspended for too many technical fouls.
The incident with Jordan Poole, however, is Draymond’s worst moment with the Warriors. It happened during a practice before the 2022-23 season and it’s widely credited for breaking apart their championship roster. After Poole was playing and talking trash in practice, he said something that unleashed Draymond’s full fury.
At that moment, Green punched Poole square in the face and knocked him out cold in front of the entire team. To make matters even worse, the whole ordeal was recorded on camera and later leaked to the NBA media.
Once the whole world discovered Draymond’s betrayal, it became a national news story and the Warriors had no choice but to not only address the incident but take action to restore the team’s chemistry.
Poole was traded to the Washington Wizards, where he remains today. As for Green, he is still an important part of the Warriors but he often looks back with regret over how he handled the Jordan Poole situation. Had he just kept his cool or reacted in a non-physical way, the Warriors would have been much better off.
All he can do now is learn from that mistake and ensure that he’s a better teammate and mentor for their current young core. So far, with Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody, Draymond has been an inspiration to them and he’s doing what he can every day to make up for the damage he caused.
